Yes you can receive with the ears but you would need to be living relatively close to the transmitter to receive them, also if your home has thick walls or any obstruction towards line of site to transmitter there's also problems.

Channels are same for the whole country...

If you happen to have NTL/UPC/Virgin Media broadband you can connect your TV directly to the cable and receive 13 or 17 analogue channels depending on your part of Dublin, including the main UK channels except UTV.

You won't need a Saorview box and you'll be able to get them on any old television as they are analogue, so it might be easier and cheaper than Saorview if you do have cable broadband. You'll get the main UK channels which you won't have on Saorview, as well as the Irish channels, but you won't get any HD channels, RTÉjr, RTÉ News Now or RTÉ One +1.

You can't use rabbits ears. They are for VHF which was phased out when we went digital. You need a yagi or similar set top one.

Too much junk being sold as TV antennas these days. (SLX / One 4 All and their ilk) A lot of them are simply a vertical wire and wideband (read noisy) amplifier enclosed in a lot of plastic. Anything that says "Digital" is overpriced fraudulently advertised junk because the signal doesn't become digital until it gets into the TV.

I was pleasantly surprised by a black box aerial that one of the German discounters did a while back. It was actually directional. I'd recommend it as it was only a tenner if it didn't suit but they don't have them anymore.

Put your antenna near a window to avoid the walls. In Dublin you need to point at Three Rock or Kippure which ever works best will depend on your line of sight including local buildings.

You could fry an egg with the signal from three rock across most of Dublin

I use rabbit ears. Just works (agree you don't need the "digital" stuff though).

I used an old indoor ariel for a while in Carlow town and got a clear picture for all stations.
