What cars/engines specifically? Each will have their own quirks and problems.

They are more work to keep on the road compared to a Micra, but it's all relative. When we know more, hopefully we can advise better.

Very cheap, it only cost me 75c to replace a brake light bulb in my 2002 ML 270 CDi the other day.

I ran a 5 series E39 for a few years. I had the interface module and a laptop. Only thing I had to go to main dealer for, was replacement key.
There were loads of aftermarket parts available.
And loads of parts from scrapped cars.
e.g. I could get 4 alloys with good tyres for the cost of one premium tyre.
If you can diy they are not too bad to run.
    Dunno about the Mercs.

Having had both at some stage (petrol/diesel mercs and petrol BMWs, 3 series/5 series/c class/e class) personally I prefer the mercs. Simpler, better to work on comfier. BMW to me felt more modern interior wise though they had niggly little electrical issues that would annoy you.

Currently in a diesel corolla and if I had half a chance I'd be back in a merc

I've had both and would recommend the Mercs. My Bmw had constant issues and ate money. Build quality is inferior and it nearly broke me. It certainly cured me of ever wanting to own another

I owned both likewise, and even the "Bad build" w203 MB was less cost to run and better build than the BMW.

Come back when you have had more extensive suspension work done and we will see what that figure will be.

To be fair though the same bulb types are used through all the manufacturers so a light bulb is not a good way to measure how cheap it is to run a car.

Well ive been looking at a 2002 Mercedes C-Class C180 but i heard some of the earlier C-class models are petrol hungry not sure how true that is ?

    I also was looking at a 2002 Bmw 3 Series,318

Feel free to recommend different models Thanks
