    I'm 17 and I'm looking to get something small for my first car. Could anyone recommend anything for a first car and an insurance company that wouldn't absolutely crucify me on it. Thanks in advance.

    Depending on your budget;

    Toyota Yaris? - too girly?

    Fiat Punto?

    Without knowing the budget it's hard recommend any sort of car.

    Also there is no one insurance company that is cheap for everyone. Insurance costs are different for everyone so you will just have to spend some time shopping around the various companies once you have decided on a particular car. There isn't really a short cut to pricing insurance.

    it's actually more like there is no insurance company that will insure a 17 year old anymore. seems like the privilege of driving has now shifted to 18. do your lessons during your 17th year, started driving at 18 = much more reasonable.

    +1 on the Punto, lots of specimens out there around the grand mark. Axa at least last time I talked to them had it in one of their lowest insurance groups (with the 1.2l 8V engine).

    Very easy car to work on and learn some servicing/maintenance too, and parts are cheap and widely available, timing belt can be a DIY job. Excellent and active online community at fiatforum (http://www.fiatforum.com/punto-ii/).

    Things to look out for:
    Head gasket (any signs of oil getting into the water system)
    Power steering problems (dodgy battery can give apparent power-steering problems, but clears up with new battery, however if the electric power steering packs in you've a very expensive problem)
    Corrosion, look especially along sills underneath car.

    Micra, Punto, Panda.

    About insurance, ring everyone in this list.
