    Hi all,

I'm changing jobs in the new year and will be working in Dublin, 99% likelihood i'll be working in the city centre.

My girlfriend and I have a preference for living in Naas and commuting in purely for the rent being cheaper and we don't want to live near the hustle bustle of a busy city centre.

Would there be any other recommended locations to live in and around Dublin or Kildare where the rent wouldn't be too dear but where it also wouldn't be an overly busy place to live, traffic-wise

Sallins would be a good guess, very small with a train stop. Gets you into Dublin in like 25 mins from train or driving, traffic dependent.

If you're commuting by train, bear in mind train from Naas/Sallins only goes to Heuston and you have to get Luas or bus to city centre. Leixlip and Maynooth are also in Kildare but are on a different trainline that brings you right into Connolly/Tara/Pearse. If you are heading out in city centre at night time, taxis that go beyond the county boundary really become expensive. If you are big into socialising in Dublin, check out if Nitelink buses go where you choose to live. I live in Ongar just inside the Co Meath border and can get a train from 10 minutes walk (Hansfield) to Docklands/IFSC in under 25 minutes. (40 minutes from my door to IFSC desk!)

Ya travel expenses will be way up regardless of where we're commuting from. To be honest we'll mainly be in dublin to work, won't be going out that much in dublin. Would probably be handier if I could get transport to connolly rather than heuston alright. A few of the places I'm hoping to work in are about a 10 minute walk from Stephens green, dublin 2 I think.

Bear in mind that some trains serving Kildare that currently terminate in Heuston will, from Autumn 2016, continue on to Connolly, Tara, Pearse and Grand Canal/Barrow Street via the Phoenix Park Tunnel

I use Dublin Bikes (hail rain or shine) from Heuston to get to grand canal dock. takes 15 mins or so

You could try around clonsilla in Dublin 15 . The train station is there for town . Or you could cycle into town

I live in Naas and work in Dublin, gonna move back to Dublin next week. The traffic wouldn't be a huge issue if you can work flexibly - flexible hours and perhaps working from home 1 day/week. If not, then it could be an issue especially from October to mid-December - delay on N7 exit 7 and 6, delay on M50 almost every day. If you have to live in Naas, then try rail or bus (no. 126).

Naas town itself is lovely though, tesco, aldi, lidl, supervalue, woodies, b&q, harvey norman, and high street in the town, friendly neighbor and schools.

Don't have to live in Naas, just thought it would a cheaper option than Dublin and seems like a nice town. Would really prefer to avoid living in Dublin if at all possible, if it was my choice I'd stay in Limerick for life but have to follow the heart I suppose :P

Would the train from Sallins every day coupled with the lower rent in Naas/Sallins work out cheaper than living in Dublin and using the Luas every day to get to work?

IMO no. The rent is increasing after Kerry group moved in 2 years ago. 1k for 2 beds apt, 15 euro traffic expense each day for 22 working days per month, makes 15*22/per person per month, that makes 1.6k if both of you are working. Then the most struggle is to get up early, it's a nightmare for me. :)

I was told maybe Sandyford or Stepaside. Basically somewhere on the Luas line. Any opinions on these places?

Im currently living in Sallins & its a lovely place to live IMO, nice and quiet. We have been there a good few years now and can really recommend it, and its so close to Naas which has plenty of pubs, restuarants etc. The rents have seriously gone up in the last year or so since Kerry moved in though.

I started working near Stephens Green a few months ago and was initially getting the train and it was tough going to be honest. It costs a fortune, it would def be helpful if your company can do the taxsaver ticket. I was getting the 7.37 train, then the 145 bus across town, and it was working out very expensive.

I moved to driving in and out as I have somewhere to park, and then I Dublin Bike the 2 miles or so from car parking spot to work. Now I do have to leave early to avoid the worst of the traffic, and I really notice in the last 2 months it has gotten a lot busier for the winter months, but it is working out much more cost effective.

I have gotten the train a handful of times lately, and getting the bus across time can be a nightmare in traffic, was just making it in for work at 9am getting the 7.37 and 145 bus, however during the summer it was a lot faster. Getting back to heuston in the evenings can also be quite slow, was lucky to make the 6.10 train, but generally was on the 6.25. Just something to keep in mind, the train from Sallins is a relatively short journey, but its the getting across town that takes just as long. Also the trains can be very full by the time you get to Sallins, generally stand on both journeys.
