Cutting Glass

    Here's one for ye.

I have a 6mm glass pane out the back, about a metre long. The end is broken but the remaining piece is still about a metre. I want to cut it up into smaller sections so I can bundle it up, cover with cardboard, tape it up and dispose of it.
Thing is I don't have a glass cutters. Have never had or needed one and will probably never need one again. So how do I reduce the glass into smaller pieces without one? The cuts obviously don't have to be very precise. I'd prefer not to smash it and I don't have any wet-saws that might do the job.

If you search the web you'll find all sorts of suggestions such wrapping a string soaked in fuel, igniting it and plunging into cold water.

If you can't you bring it to your local dump/amenity in one piece then I'd just put it in a few of heavy duty bin liners, set it down on something soft like carpet or soil and gently break it up with a hammer. If the bags get pierced then just add more bin liners.

I've seen the plunging it in water suggestion but I mean it's over a metre long and over half a metre wide.

It's not the easiest thing to get in the car either.

Wrapping it up in something and smashing is a good idea. I'd prefer cutting it into manageable pieces but it's an option. I might try a few tools later and see if anything manages to score the glass to allow me to break it.

    Thanks.

what about a tile cutter - it prob still wouldnt be sharp enough or delicate enough.

Or the sharpest blade you have to score it and then attempt to break it at the score line inside a heavy duty black bag or a sheet.

Or...what id do - wrap it in an old sheets stick it in a black bag and hit it with a hammer.

Use a metal file, one that's pointed at the top. Give it a jab and it will shatter into safe cube size pieces.

Appreciate all the help, thanks. They probably all would have worked. Though there's always a simple way and they're usually the best way!

I covered both sides with tape and broke it like that. On the floor with a wedge underneath, a few steps here and there and I could fold it over very neatly to a nice box sized shape. A bit of cardboard around it, a bit more tape and Bob's your mother's brother!
