So, I received the feared tv licence letter yesterday, addressed directly to me. I had by now unsubscribed from my upc tv services because I had no time or interest to watch tv. . I only have internet with , now, Virgin Media. I was told that even if I only have a laptop at home but I have Virgin internet supplied via a cable I'd still need to have the licence. Can anyone she'd some light on this please and what are your personal experiences ?

If you have a TV at home you have to have a license, regardless of what TV service you have.

If the TV is sitting in the corner doing nothing you still need a license.

If you have no TV at all then you don't need a license.

There was proposals to redefine the TV licence to a communication license because people are not consuming TV the same way as the used to, but that has been shelved for now, election on the way and all that.

They will send you out a letter think it's called a declaration for not having a TV letter or some such sh1te. Just sign it and send it back to them. I did this couple of years back and haven't heard from them since.

I've just ignored all those letters. I haven't had a TV for probably about 10 years. I don't really want to acknowledge their correspondence at all. I'd prefer they don't know of my existence.

Never had a call to the door from an inspector but I'd be gone most the day anyway.

The thing about the laptop is a lie, it's pretty disgusting that a government department either wouldn't know the rules or would flat out lie. I've checked the website over and over again, it clearly says you don't need a license for a laptop.

If they force the license onto computers it would be pretty bad for businesses.

Sorry I should correct, the thing about licence being required for internet cable did not come from an post. :) had I thought ,just as you, that once there's no tv =no licence so when I heard this about cable connected internet ( from someone ) I wanted to hear second opinions .
