Paid for welding. Per nct tester: no weld done, silicon or glue - so fail

    Just asking for opinions, old car, failed nct on 4 things, one of which was small hole on underside. Got usual mechanic, quoted 120 for weld... And then as the title says... No welding actually done. Tester actually showed me lack of weld. Am seriously pissed off... Not lot of money involved but its the being robbed essentially.

    Other stuff was fixed separately and is fine. However tester id'ed other problems, can they do that on retest?

    Given age of car, new things id'ed essentially means cars gone, not worth spending more.

    Intend to demand 120 back off mechanic which i think is reasonable??

    Suppose maybe I should be thinking that in fifteen yrs owning cars, its first time I feel I've been robbed..

    And to be fair I've no issue with nct guys. Mechanic tho... Its the looking at you and lying to your face.

    So, end of rant. Will now go to walking dead forum now for some apocalyptic calmness, or something!

    Is it possible that the mechanic welded a different section and there was a mixup of where the actual damage to be repaired was?

    Hi thanks, hadnt occurred to me, but don't think so, was v clear where issue was even from diagram from first test and that's what he 'siliconed'...

    When tester showed me, it was exactly where it should have been from first test result.

    If he's bodged that repair god knows what other messing he's been at.

    Definitely talk with the mechanic, but nicely :) A good weld should be completely invisible once it's painted over. I had some welding done on a sill recently following a NCT fail and the guy suggested getting the retest done before painting so that traces of the weld would be visible. A NCT tester isn't and shouldn't go removing paint to check if the work is done properly underneath.

    And yet they're regularly seen poking with a large flathead at "rust"

    Thanks, good point. Hopefully that's it.... We'll see.

    You were right per mechanic anyway! ...not completely sure myself, but had test again on Tuesday, different tester, full test, and passed. Big relief!!!
