I'd be somewhat savvy with router settings, but I can't get this to work.

I disabled the 2.4ghz network after using it for the last few months.

I enabled the 5ghz. Gave it a new network name and wifi password. Saved the settings. Happy days.

However I can't connect with my iPhone 6S or my MacBook Pro, both of which have 5ghz capability.

I see the network, connect, put in my password, and then I get a message "Unable to join network". It's not a password issue, and I'm about 5 feet from the router with no walls in the way. Any ideas ???

I've rebooted the router a few times but doesnt seem to work. Connecting by Ethernet is fine - no issues.

Have you tried resetting the password just in case? Or have you tried joining it without any password set?
