Renewing my learners permit tomorrow, I have all the documents, but a quick question on the proof of address, first of all do I need this as I'm applying for my third learners permit.

If I do, will a broadband statement from Meteor be acceptable?

You'll need proof of address either way.

    As in a bill? Yes
A printout from your online account? Probably not.

Thanks for the reply Colm, yes its a bill, guess I'm good to go!

One more question, would the renewal letter from department of transfer also be sufficient as proof of address?

If your Meteor bill is a utility bill for broadband service at your house (just like your gas, electricity bills) yes, they will accept that. If it's a bill from your mobile phone company, they won't accept that.

The documents that will & won't be accepted, are listed on the NDLS website.

    https://www.ndls.ie/documents-that-will-not-be-accepted.html

    https://www.ndls.ie/identity-validation.html#evidence-of-address

Btw, you only need to provide proof of address if your address has changed. If it is the same as on your second leaner permit, you don't need to provide proof of where you live.

Sorry but mobile phone bill wont be accepted. Official government body letters will so if uve a revenue letter etc you're ok

I went for my full licence and the form said i needed proof of address and a passport or something, but i wasn't asked for either and didn't have to take a new picture, so maybe you don't need it if you've got one already through the ndls?

Oddly enough that won't do! You just got the letter there! You could have been there a week. They want proof of long term. Utilities. P60s. All within 6months

Just back from the centre, so the Meteor broadband bill and the renewal letter both showing my address were not sufficient! Still got the application through though.

Another thing is they told me as my licence expires at midnight, I cannot drive until I get my card in the post, I wasn't sure at the time so didn't ask questions but found this on their website

At present, customers can expect to receive their licence or learner permit within five to eight working days. After your licence has been processed you will receive a NDLS receipt as proof of application for your licence /permit. You are advised to keep this in your vehicle. If a member of An Garda Síochána asks you to produce a licence and your licence application is being processed, you will have an opportunity to produce your licence at a Garda station within 10 days.

So the question is, can I drive or not?

NDLS renewal letters have always been posted to the address on the driver licence database i.e. the address on your previous licence? Is the address you are living at the exact same address as on your previous licence? If so, im not sure why you needed proof of address as it would only be needed if your entitlement had expired (over 5 years) or you had amended your address. NDLS has not accepted mobile phone bills (and associated broadband) since day one as Prouddub mentioned. As the NDLS website states most Gardai have discretion to give you up the 10 days to produce your licence if stopped. However, its your decision at the end of the day. But I've yet to hear of a driver being prosecuted for having no licence while holding a renewal receipt.

It was a slight change of address, same house but a slight amendment. Don't know why I bothered changing it but it went through anyway. Ya I just find it odd that you book an appointment and wait for a few weeks to go in while at the same time the licence is getting closer to expiry date and then they tell you that you can't drive tomorrow when it expires. Thanks for all the replies it put my mind at ease.

You're fine because as of recently, they can to make some changes without proof as long as the address is fundamentally the same. You can now change townlands or street names and add things like house name without proof but for example, you couldn't correct a house number as this is a very specific detail.

Did they give you your permit back to you? If you can show a Guard a (very recently expired) permit and a NDLS receipt, I reckon it's unlikely you'll have too much trouble. The NDLS have handled over a million applications in under two years so if these receipts were causing otherwise law abiding motorists trouble then you would have probably already heard about it, IMO.

Ya they gave my permit back to me as it expires at midnight and then said no driving from tomorrow which I thought was odd...but ya I will use the receipt and still have the old one.
