IFA in conjunction with AGS are launching theft stop in an attempt to reduce farm machinery theft.

A trail has already been carried out and now its being launched nationwide.

    What do we think?

They'll just remove the lettering and chances are whoever stole it will be able to shift it on again without much fuss, if they bided their time instead of trying to DoneDeal it straight away.

    Its something at least...

I have cheap CCTV at my house, covers all 4 sides and can see reg of vehicles entering..

the yard isn't covered at all, I'm thinking of getting a trail cam to cover that.. easy to hide and records movies or photos.. something like this

Who's limiting the number of places you put the letters.
If they have to file and polish every surface they might think twice

It'll slow them down, but it's not guaranteed to stop them. Cars, motorbikes and boat engines all with unique serial no's get stolen all over the place and are never seen again.

The only thing that might make them think twice is serious punishments being handed down, and we're not seeing those.

when they are taking it I doubt they will be checking for numbers. they will file them off and sell again.

if the marks are too unique they may just dump it of sell for half nothing.

if you have an outboard engine hide the hood somewhere else. its useless without it.

I've used the Acorn cameras a bit. They can be excellent in the correct location, but we're often let down by phone coverage., if your coverage is poor they're very limited.
Another factor that may be an issue is cost. A busy location can generate a lot of mms and a lot of cost. E mails on the other hand are free!
But, set up correctly in the right location they're a great tool.

If everyone bought goods from legitimate sellers a lot of these crimes and thefts would stop.

Forgot to mention, the crime prevention officer for Meath is running a security exhibition on Saturday at Ashbourne GAA club, plenty of advice will be on offer as well as talks from crime prevention officers

I think it's the security firm that's giving the discount

The problem I have is all this stuff going on a data base, what's to stop someone with a criminal mind accessing all the info and locations? How safe is it? If a 15 yr old in N Ireland was able to hack into a data base (talk talk's?) I'd have doubts about putting a list of my valuables up on cyberspace.
AFAIK insurance companies had a list of valuables, stuff like valuable paintings/jewellery that were too valuable to be covered on ordinary house contents cover, compromised a while back.
This would be like an online shopping centre for thieves. Apologies for having a criminal mind, it's the dept of ag that has me this way.:o
What's wrong with just engraving a mobile number on a trailer?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.
