Nobody interested in my car

    I've advertised my 2007 new shape Ford Mondeo hatch 1.8 TDCI on Done Deal without an ounce of interest except one scammer. The car has 124000 miles and just passed an NCT with a dry timing belt. I paid 5000 for it 3 months ago and am looking for 4500 for it.

    Why is there no interest? I fail to see.

    just a word of advice - don't mention that in your ad.

    get some more quality photos, not in your backyard but some more presentable place, preferably with natural light

    It looks dirty. I could get a decent Audi for that price. You're mad

    +1,good wash and better photos.
    I would remove the bit about having a dry belt.Most people would think this is a fault and not know the difference in the 1.8 tdci engine,between having a dry belt/wet belt etc.

    Has the belt been changed?If it has i would state that.

    High road tax and 4500 to high

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

    Hi op add in that timing belt was done also was the clutch and flywheel changed?
    Take as many pics as allowed and take 1 with front and side view for 1st photo.

    Wash car as advised above.

    Try and get in good light not dark.

    Add if has air/con, heated windscreen if fitted, any other extras you can see or think of.

    Add genuine mpg its getting.

    Put in ad nearest offer.

    You're comparing a 1.8 economical diesel car to a 3.7 petrol gas guzzler....seriously....

    Nonsense.

    It's coming up to it's tenth year, which of course means an NCT every year. Also, simple photoshop technicques can really help. Also, € 3500 is the price

    it was a bit of a laugh in response to that challenge to find a good audi for that price, I found a great one ,
    but it is apples and oranges. I would highly recommend anyone to buy that A8 though, serious motoring.

    As said earlier, give the car a wash.
    Don't take portrait pictures, you should be doing landscape.
    Take the car somewhere nice (no disrespect to you or your yard) and take pictures close up, but in such a way that you're not cutting the car out of the picture. You need one of the front, drivers side, rear, passenger side, and one of the interior.
    Any other ones you can get in are a bonus. I normally do 4 pics taken at 45 degree angle to the car so you get all 4 corners shown in the ad.
    image.jpg
    I would also remove mountmellick from the ad if possible. (again, no offence) or even change it to Kildare, or if you work in Dublin, change it to Dublin.

    It's not an overly desirable car, it's basic LX spec, colour is good though. You need to make your ad look better than the countless other cheap Mondeos out there. If there is service history on it - show it. If it has 2 keys - mention it. As much detail as you can put into the ad really.

    3500? No way. That's far too cheap. It's in good condition with reasonably low milage.

    Wash the car and clean the tires. First thing I noticed in the photo of the back seats was the muck all up the tire, doesn't really give off the greatest impression (to me anyway).

    The milage isn't really that low in fairness, granted a chunk of that could be motorway miles. But relatively low milage to me would be 130,000km for that year or sub 100,000 for low milage.

    I'd put it in for 4200 and be happy with 3800-3900.

    - Wash it, hoover it and take it somewhere nice where you can get bigger landscape pictures from all angles and the interior
    If I'm going to make the effort to look at the car, I'll want to see as much as I can first

    - Fill out the text. Mention the history (if any), keys, anything like "timing belt recently changed" etc. NCT passed really means very little.
    If I'm looking at a car and none of this is mentioned, again I'll just move on to the next ad.

    - Be realistic. It's a very common car at entry level spec with high mileage (by Irish standards). It's also almost 9 years old. €3.5-4k is probably about right.

    Look at how the A8 is presented. .... Now look at your ad.

    There's your answer!

    OP, as I posted in your other thread in the buying section recently, there are similar cars for sale for alot less than 4,500.

    For example:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/ford-mondeo/10795312?offset=1
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2007-ford-mondeo/10797959?offset=2
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/ford-mondeo-1-8-tdci-new-nct/10769615?offset=3

    No offense but the red one above looks a more attractive proposition on first impression. It's cheaper and the photos are much better. I just cannot see you getting even 4k for it.

    Have to admit I did laugh at:
    some scratches around body as last owner was lady.

    I thought "lady owner" was supposedly a GOOD thing :p

    Depends on the class of lady in question. :D

    Remove the no texts part for sure. You are probably eliminating 50% of your potential market, every car I have ever bought or sold started with a text message. Straight up calling is very 2006

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

    Also could increase the chances of dealing with time wasters who have unlimited text messages on their mobile phone plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

    And get a disposable/PAYG phone so you're not tortured after you sell it with calls/texts from other potential buyers/tyre kickers or someone deciding you owe them a warranty because something has gone wrong (as we see threads about here all the time)

    No offense meant, and this might also be something that changes from person to person, but here's what would put me off your ad:

    1. The pictures are extremely small and it's impossible to evaluate any detail;
    2. The exterior of the car is fairly dirty;
    3. The interior picture showing the driver seat also shows dirty footwell and pedals, plus lack of a mat, which to me are signs of poor care;
    4. Rural setting of the pictures: together with the above, brings the doubt the the car might have been driven extensively on bad roads;
    5. Dirty / discoloured tire walls point to old tires;
    6. The description is minimal and just looks like a few things thrown on, by somebody who doesn't actually care much about cars - again, it looks particularly bad combined with all the above;

    People with a bit of an expert eye will be able to see that, beneath, the car is actually in good conditions - but not many people around have that insight, and you want to reach the widest possible base of buyers.

    As suggested already a good wash, a set of cheapish mats (sub 10€ in Lidl or Aldi would be fine for the purpose), good, big pictures taken in a more attractive setting would already go a long, long way. Also, put some more in the description - emphasize the good points of the car; Did you have any jobs done to it, e.g. timing belt, clutch? Mention it. The car drives well, is comfortable, silent? Say it :D

    why are you selling ? if I saw a car for sale that someone had only 6 months it would put me off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Op wants a Passat instead.
