Underpinning a single-storey cottage.

This is a renovation project yet to begin.

The property is in excess of 200yrs old and has no traditional foundations - or so I'm told.
It shows no sign of subsidence, but before I commit a shed load of cash on the place - including the cost of a small extension - I figure a structural survey needs carrying out.

So the question is: if underpinning is needed what ball-park figure per metre should I be looking at? If the cost is excessive I might as well consider demolition and building a bungalow on site. This isn't something I want to do as I like the the idea of living in a traditional cottage.

By now, it should be obvious to ye all that I'm no builder.

    Any help gratefully received.
