Part worn tyres

So yesterday i managed to source a matching set of part worn continentalsfor my car 2 from one company and the remaining 2 from a better known partworntyre company, who i had fit the lot.

In there for a hour and its about the third set of tyres iv had (as well as herselfcar) and zero problems so happy out.

Job done pay €30 for the to fit the 2 tyres i brought and the full whack forthe tyres they provided, theirs on the front mine on the back, and i drovehome.

Now this morning i leave the house at 7am let the engine warm up and pullaway to the distinct sound of rim on concrete.

i pull over and the front left is completely flat as a pancake, and the 2 onthe back are very down.

I ring up the crowd i got to put them on and while apologetic they were mainlysaying how strange it was and how its NEVER happened before, and even went asfar as to tell me my tyres could have been slashed. Now i said not being funnybut they have not been slashed this is obviously something you have done as itwould be an amazing coincidence that 3 of my tyres got slashed the night i got4 new ones put on.

I asked him to come and sort the car out as it is beached where it is, andhe said he has no way of getting out, which im surprised that a big firm withmany branches and a ex boyzone owner cant provide transport, but basically ihave to go home now put the spare on and limp the car (potentially doing moredamage to them).

Now apart from the "buy part worns get f*cked over" opinion which I’msure many people have, where do i stand on this?

I’m worried about the 2 tyres i bought over myself is that a separateargument or should they have been checked prior to fitting?

If the front left is damaged from sitting on the flat do they have toprovide me with a replacement or is it at my expense?

I don’t want to go mental but i will now have had to pay for 2 taxis and don’tfancy having to buy 4 new tyres on top of that!

to be fair, the two back tyres could have had holes in them for all they know. That's the thing with supplying your own second hand stuff to fit.
If they had supplied all the tyres, then fair enough you'd expect them to do something. But as it stands, the spare wheel would do for the one they sold you.
It is a bit odd though that they all went down.

If there is a garage nearby, maybe you could bring down the wheels to get pumped up

Im malahide and the garage is just at the airport, so the spare wheel will get me there but im imagining the tyre on the front is gone now from having the rim on it all night, they could tell me to f off with the rears but how do i return them to the other company if theyre on the car?

The whole problem with all of this is the title of your thread imho.

Now apart from the "buy part worns get f*cked over" QUOTE]

    classic case alright.

the two you bought second hand and put on the rear, you only paid the garage to put them on the rim, which they did, so really you have no comeback whatsoever there. do you know where they came from or why the previous owner got rid of them?

the one on the front. wait and see what happens. maybe the valve went faulty, this would be your fault; maybe there was a screw in it, which wouldn't be the garages fault. the only way it could possibly be the garages fault is if the tyre is very badly perished, but it's very unlikely that they are selling tyres in that condition.

people love to hate part worns, but once you go about the process with a bit of logic, they can sometimes be a good solution. i'd be a regular user and it's always worked out well.

I bought them from another part worn tyre supplier down the road, same story as tyreland.

I suppose i just need them to look and hope for the best

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Obviously don't drive on them. I don't think the tyre would get damaged from the rim sitting on it as long as it wasn't driven like that.

    Were the valves changed?

The rim sitting on the tyre overnight won't have damaged it. Get some air into them with a portable compressor. Plugs into a cigarette adaptor. If it's a slow puncture, this should get you from your house to garage to have them checked. Garage has no responsibility for fitting the rear if you brought the tyres to them to be fitted. The place you bought them could very well blame the place that fitted them and basically tell you to pfo.

Did you actually inspect the part worns or just ask for em and they threw w/e on?

Guys at Tyreland were awesome came out to my place got her in a condition to drive to the shop replaced the fronts with 2 mint dunlops free of charge and the 2 rears were shagged, bad quality with bad repairs and one sidewall pinhole that was missed yesterday aka cowboy tyres that I'm bringing back tomorrow for a full refund. So we're swapping the one remaining good continental to the back putting a new partworn continental on the other side and iv 4 tyres that are tested on the car and with the refund I'm actually up 20 euro.

Delighted, now keep your fingers crossed they hold pressure overnight ha

I've used the other place at Castlewarden and found them to be very thorough, they let you check the tyres out before they fit them and finally throw the whole wheel and tyre into a tank of water to check for leaks.
I got two Pirellis pzeros with 5.5mm thread for €50 each fitted which retail at €300 each normally, no problems with them what so ever.

Would you buy second hand shoes?
No price can be put on safety. I can't understand someone buying a car for for 10 - 12k and then put €30 tyres on it. It's like an Armani suit and a pair of hand me down shoes from your grandad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭_davidsmith_

Not being funny but i would consider second hand shoes ha

And i know you cant put a price on safety and the tyre companies certainly do, i would rather top line part worn tyres than brand new sunnys that are made out of hardened plastic.

I know its not the best move as buy cheap buy often as i know now but iv had partworns on all my cars for the last few years and must have been very lucky as iv never had a problem, until this catastrophic failure of an exercise.

I know anyone who says part worns are a bad idea is right but i made a judgment call and it bit me in the ass.

It's not really anything like that.

Is there any link between (lack of) safety and part worn tyres?

Every car in the world ever on the road has part worn tyres on it so they can't be too bad.

I'd rather myself spending €40 a corner on premium name part worns than brand new untested, uncertified chinese plastic if money was an issue.

My thoughts exactly, but there are many many people who basically say i deserve anything i get for not buying brand new tyres (one guy on backroads likened it to me using a second hand condom) he seems to have some problem, the snobbery is strong with many people

Not many good part worns out there though. They are either very old or there's not a whole lot of thread left on them, or both. Four matching part worns are also very difficult to source.

In most cases they are a false economy imo.

I must be lucky, any sets i've bough have went well for me. Obviously buy with your wits about you and don't accept odd or fecked tyres, but I wouldn't rule them out as a concept.

Most people don't know what to look for though. Most cars I've seen with part worns have all had mismatched tires that were at least 8 years old, there was a nice bit of wear on the tires in most cases too. When I went looking for part worns myself I couldn't get a good set. I'd end up picking out a tire only to find it's very old or that it was the only tire of that kind available.

I find that most part works have a horrible shiny look to them too for some reason.

I can only speak from my own experiences though. You've obviously had a better experience with them. :)

Mine are all 2014 and grade A or A+ wouldn't really go for any less, obviously let my guard down this time but for the majority of people who wouldn't know I could see how you could be fecked over

Everytime you buy a car, You get it transported to the nearest tyre place and get all 4 replaced?

    No?

Partworns can be fine, But there are a LOT of Cowboys selling old/mismatched and sometimes winter tyres. This is what gives them a bad name.

Very important to check the date of manufacture on the tyres. A while ago, I brought a car to the NCT for somebody as a favour. Car passed but got Pass/Advisory for two matching tyres which had been bought second hand.

The tyres were older than the car!

Scroll down to the bottom of this page to see how to check DOM of a tyre.
    http://www.rsa.ie/RSA/Your-Vehicle/About-your-Vehicle/Example-of-non-Dup/Your-Vehicles-Tyres-/Tyre-Upkeep/

If tyre reads 1211 it means the tyre was manufactured in the twelfth week of 2011.

If it reads 128 (three digits), it means the tyre was produced in the twelfth week of the eighth year of a decade before 2000, e.g 1998 or 1988.

I recently saw a trailer tyre with this three digit system - it's in near daily use on the road too!

You're the young man with the Cosworth, aren't you? I expect most petrolheads would know alright but I find many people are unable to isolate the DOM from all the other info on a tyre or are even aware it's there.

    Yawn...

Well unless you fit brand new tyres every time you drive 100 yards, you too are driving on pre worns.

I really don't understand the issue everyone has with them but every time they get mentioned on a forum someone feels they have to trot out the lines above.

You should have seen the backroads thread before one of the moderators shut it down, it was a lot worse than this, even other moderators getting involved with their childish digs at me about them
