I travel Cork / Dublin twice a week and as the car is coming up 15 years old, I really need to get some sort of roadside rescue. Ideally with a 'get you home' element as I don't want to be stranded in between.

I know AIG offer it on my car insurance, but other than AA are there many choices out there - anyone got any recommendations ?

Axa do a stand-alone policy that's is hour at scene of breakdown to try get u mobile and if required, towage to garage of YOUR choice .. On the Axa.ie page it's a option under car insurance tab

What car have you? Motorway driving is the easiest driving for any car provided you aren't pushing the engine. How many times has it broken down doing the journey so far? Learning basic maintenance will serve you better than paying for rescue insurance which is what the AA is. Much better to spend a bit too make sure it doesn't brake down than pay to sit at the side of the road.

To be honest I'm not 'expecting' the car to break down as it gives absolutely no trouble - its a 2001 318i with only 30k miles on the clock from new (yes you did read that correctly !) & BMW serviced from new up to last year, but its still nearly 15 years old. Its more that if it does happen, there's very little I can fix roadside & whilst the motorway is easier on it, I don't want to take the risk of being stranded 100+ miles from home or work.

you're dead right OP. don't know which one is best though. I usually just get whatever comes with my insurance. haven't needed it yet

I have AA roadside recovery. Have had it on a few cars now.

Find it great in Dublin, if you call they give you an hour to get back to you but normally someone with you in about 30-40 mins.....

But, was in Kerry recently...went to Tralee and left radio going while sitting in car and forgot all about it. Anyway battery dead, my fault. Rang AA, was told they would get someone to me ASAP, waited 1 hour and got call back saying they had guy on way and he would be there within 45 mins......1 hour later and he arrived. They had nobody in area so he had driven from far side of Limerick to do a 2 min job

From what I can see it is great in big cities but don't expect a quick turnaround if any distance outside those bigger cities
