USC Refund

As part of my college course, I was on a 5 month paid work placement over the summer. For payroll purposes, my annual salary was stated as 18000 pro rata. Since I only worked for part of the year, I only actually earned around 7500 of that.

My understanding was that I would have to pay Universal Social Charge at the time, based on the 18000 figure, and then I'd be able to claim it back once I had my p45 stating what I actually received.

I sent in my p50 last week, along with the p45. I received a letter today saying that there is no refund due to me at present, but that I may reapply at the end of the year.

Is this a mistake on Revenue's part, or am I missing something here?

Very unlikely that it's a mistake. Are you sure it said the end of the year? It usually says 4 weeks (or 8 if you're getting taxable Social Welfare)

It did say 8 weeks, which works out to be the end of the year, just coincidence I suppose. I am not receiving any Social Welfare however, just a student grant
