The temperature gauge wont rise at all on my Diesel passat. I think it's the coolant temp sensor that is gone? Is it ok to still drive the car until i fix it? Any info would be great.

A few things could cause the temp gauge not to rise. It could be the sensor, it could be the thermostat, it could be a faulty gauge.

Is there coolant in the expansion tank? Does hot air come from the air vents after the engine has warmed up? If so then you should be ok to drive. A quick diagnostic check will confirm if the sensor is working correctly.

Thank you for the reply. Yes hot air still comes out of the vents. It's just water in the tank!?? No coolant

Are you sure your looking at the expansion tank? It looks like this...

Don't think it is wise to have water alone in your cooling system. Coolant has a higher boiling point than water and will be more efficient in keeping your engine at the correct temperature. There is a specific coolant recommended for car types so it is quite important to use the right one and not to mix types, or you may get hot spots.
I would only use water in an emergency to top up the expansion tank.
Perhaps the water caused your problem in the first nstance.

Easy on there guys, coolant temp sensor is a common issue on these.

It's a cheap and easy fix and I'd bet money on it being the culprit.

Change that first before looking deeper into the matter and jumping to any other conclusions.

Also, yes, car is fine to drive, might not be as economical but it's not causing any damage.

I put coolant in and the needle jumped about a bit but soon went back. I wonder how difficult it is to change the sensor?

    Takes 10 minutes.

Make sure you let the engine cool down as you dont want to burn your hand.

Also, you'll need to top it up afterwards as you'll lose a bit of coolant (water should be ok as you wont lose much)
