Price is usually a fair reflection of quality. There's a huge selection and its a highly organised business - hotel pick ups and drop offs usually on offer. I'd check out some of the package operators selling you 3/4 round deals on various courses. From my experience you will probably get two you love, one that disappoints and one that is just OK. But you will save a lot compared to the walk-up prices.

Avoid Pinhal and Millennium. Two dreadful courses. I wouldnt take free rounds there never mind paying what they ask for.

Have to disagree on Millennium. Front 9 are as good as any. Back 9 not as good but would be a good course in Ireland

Pinhal is a good challenge too. Some serious dog legs that test your shot making.

Vale do Lobo (http://valedolobo.com/en/) have 2 courses and usually have a 3 rounds for the price of 2 offer.
The old course (http://www.oceanicogolf.com/our-courses/oceanico-old-course/) is nice but expensive as are most of the courses.

San Lorenzo is by far the best course in the Faro area. I don't know if you can just book green fees there. You can get it as part of a package if you stay either in the Dona Felipe or Formosa Park hotels. You also get the Pinheiros Altos courses (3 nines), in these deals and they are also good. The Formosa Park deal is particularly good value.
Other than that I would recommend both the Vale do Lobo courses.

My advice would be get yourself to vilamoura & play victoria , pinhal and the old course . Having played in the area for a good few years now these stand out as the best and most challenging to me . Millennium a good course too despite what was said above . Larangal (a bit outside vilamoura) is also a cracker now that its matured a bit . We usually book with teetimes.pt and get very good deals .
Main thing is you enjoy it as its a great trip and area .

I'm sorry, but if you think Pinhal is a good course then one must question your standards. The greens are some of the worst I have ever played on and make Bodenstown look like Augusta.

Played Victoria, Laguna and the O'Connor course in Amondeira last week. Avoid Laguna as its in poor condition and the journey to Amondeira is not worth the trip as there are lot of forgettable holes in the O Connor. Having said that last 6 or 7 holes are very good. We played Victoria and it was the same set up as the recent Portugese masters albeit off different tees. It was fun to play in such conditions with the rough up but difficult to score. Just goes to show how good the pro's are. In general expensive though.

That may be a recent and I hope temporary problem. Its a few years sine I played Pinhal but I recall no problem with the greens. I do remember lots of demanding tee and second shots among the cork trees.

Never asked for your opinion mate , was just giving my own having played all local courses there many times . Never had a problem on pinhals greens . But thank you for letting me know that my standards are so far below your own . I'll remember to try to improve as i rise towards the top of the little world of Leinster based golf snobs :D

It's not based on snobbery but the fact that you spend a lot of money getting out there are then get royally screwed for green fees that would make you blanch on a third rate golf course

Again thats your opinion . You are projecting your own feelings and assuming i feel the same . I innocently mentioned that i , personally, enjoy playing those courses . Its not just the golf but the sum of golf , sun , holiday with friends etc. Having said that i feel the courses i mentioned are very good & thats simply my opinion .

There's about 50 courses on the Algarve and Pinhal is among the weakest. That's not snobbery, that's a fact.

A quck check of Tripadviser shows 159 reviews of Pinhal. 110 excellent or very good, 35 average, 10 poor, 4 terrible.
I haven't played every course around there but I've played a few worse than Pinhal. I guess somebody just had a bad day.

I thought the greens in Pinhal were a bit bumpy.
