Question 1:How do I have my details removed from your database?

Irish Water was set up as Ireland’s new national water utility company by the Water Services Act 2013.  Our relationship with our customers is founded in statute rather than in contract. The functions of Irish Water are set out in the Water Services Act 2007 to 2014 (the “Water Services Acts”).  Further details of the services we provide can be found on our website, www.water.ie.

The 2007 Water Services Act and the Water Services Act (No 2) 2013 deem an occupier of a premise as being liable for paying domestic water charges. Under the Act, it is assumed the owner is the occupier unless proved otherwise. This places the occupier as a customer.

Pursuant to section 21 of the Water Services (No. 2) Act 2013, Irish Water is obliged to charge each customer for the provision by it of water services. The obligation to pay for water services arises directly from legislation and the relationship between Irish Water and its customers is founded in statute, not in contract. On that basis, Irish Water is obliged to charge all persons who are in receipt of water services from it irrespective as to whether or not such persons have registered with Irish Water.  Section 21(3) provides that such a charge is payable on demand in such manner as Irish Water determines.  Therefore, it is not possible for us to return your registration form.  However, we can confirm that your PPS number has been deleted, as Irish Water has ensured that all PPS numbers have been removed from its systems.

Question 2: How can I return a water meter?

The water meter outside your home is part of the water network operated by Irish Water. To ensure a safe clean supply of water, all works to your water meter and the water network should only be carried out by fully trained and authorised personnel. Water meters are being fitted by personnel who are fully trained in meter installations and water hygiene.

Interference with or removal of a water meter is a criminal offence under the Water Services Act 2007 and may cause interruption to or contamination to your water supply.

Question 3: Is Irish Water a Monopoly in breach of competition laws?

Irish Water is Ireland's national water utility, responsible for providing and developing water services throughout Ireland.

If you are connected to the public water mains for water and/or wastewater services, you are deemed an Irish Water customer and will receive bills for water services to your property.

Question 4: I lost my letter for the Department of Social Protection. What will I do?

As the Water Conservation Grant is paid and administered by the Department of Social Protection, we would advise that you contact the Water Grant Support Team on 1890 100 043 and explain your situation.

Question 5: I am moving properties. How do I update my account?

If you're moving properties we advise that you call us on 1890 448 448. This is to ensure accurate billing and to have you account updated.
