    Just got vodafone fibre BB in today 25mg line. Have 23mg WIFI which is great. I have Home-plugs, 100mg capability, situated thought out the house supplying hard-lined BB through the electricity lines, one supplying BB to the desktop which im currently on.

    The problem is i only get 5.5mg download and 5 up.

    Has any one any ideas what could be the problem, the house is new so the wiring should be fine.

    Are the home plugs plugged directly into a socket where they are in use or are they perhaps in extension sockets?

    In my first attempt using them I had them in extension sockets and lost quite a bit of speed but once I plugged directly into the wall socket the speed loss disappeared.

    yeah i noticed that when i first got them so now i plug them all direct to the wall

    do they share the old eircom lines as might depend if your house is on the old exchange=slow bb

    you will never get the max stated with bb i have found.

    What's going on with the OS won't have an effect unless it's creaking along full of software and out of memory.

    Op do you have a laptop you can plug into the wall plug in place of the desktop to rule that out? I presume you're using the same method to measure the speed.

    win 7 decent enough mem fully updated, graphics card is in need of a fooking bullet. DT is plugged into Home plug (HP) about metre or less all under table top. just reinstalled the HP to see if there is any difference, still the same. if I had a laptop id go direct to the modem and see if there was any diffence but i dont :(

    You could have an old wireless card? That would be a problem too.

    The wireless, oddly enough, seems to be the good one here!

    Is there a management interface for the plugs? You might be able to tweak the settings. You could try plugging the desktop in next to the modem, have the two plugs in adjacent sockets and check speeds again, this will tell if the distance between plugs is the issue.

    no wireless card installed on PC. Ethernet (ET) cat 5 but you mite have hit something there there's on board ET and an installed card Ill try the onbaoad and check the settings for both.

    Top stuff Chiz, the SW with the HM is very very basic, but im just downloading the lateset, the DT is in the attic and the modem in the hall! not to practical to drag it down, especially not as half a bottle of plonk is in the system!

    devolo dLAN Software Package for Linux

    Version 6.1, 2010-07-08

    Copyright (c) 2006-2010 devolo AG, Aachen (Germany)

    This package contains software to find and configure your devolo dLAN devices
    on a Linux system.

    The software has been tested on Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (etch) with GCC 4.1.2 and
    on Debian 5.0 (lenny) with GCC 4.3.2, but every platform with recent Linux and
    GCC versions should work fine.

    To build the software, change into the directory where the makefile is located
    and call 'make':

    $ make

    After compilation, you should find two binaries in the same directory:

    $ ls dlan*
    dlanlist
    dlanpasswd

    Install them by calling 'make install' with root privileges:

    $ sudo make install

    Use dlanlist to get an overwiev over all dLAN devices in your network, to see
    information about their firmware version, and to see connection speeds for
    devices connected via PowerLine.

    Use dlanpasswd to assign an encryption password to a dLAN device. You need to
    assign a common password to your devices in order to get them connected via
    PowerLine. Call dlanpasswd without arguments to get command line help.

    These tools need root privileges, because they use raw sockets to send and
    receive full ethernet frames. Installing them with 'make install' takes care
    of this by setting the setuid bit, allowing non privileged users to use them.

    How is any of this a Vodafone issue? Your problem is that the homeplugs are not working well in your house. Homeplugs are completely hit or miss, work well in some houses, refuse to work at all in others. Homeplugs send a radio signal through your electrical circuitry, something as simple as a twist in a cable or an overlap can completely bork your speeds, the cables are not designed for carrying radio frequency. Also having more than two homeplugs will drastically affect the possibility of getting high speeds

    I'm ringing VF as they have a tech support. No kinks short cables only one plug active to the DT. Thats my worry that the home plug aren't up to the job

    Vodafone support won't care about your homeplugs, they will test the speed at the router and after that it's your problem.

    You don't have a broadband issue, Vodafones responsibility ends at the modem which is working fine on wireless.

    This is the trouble with homeplugs, there is no way to test the internal electrical cabling in your house as it's designed to carry electricity, not radio signals. Completely hit or miss, in your case they are not working well

    then i may have to buy wifi receivers for the DT and xbox. Sure we'll try any way, better to try and fail then to not try at all. the HP have been working fine up to now.

    What make are the homeplugs? You could try a better set of av500s see do you fare out any better. Get a set in Argos and keep the packaging, they have 14 day no quibble money back guarantee

    Laptop direct to modem in hall is 24 mg. DT on HP in attic is 7mg. TV on HP in living room is 10mg. Probably is a combo of line, HP type frequency issues, may go and buy WiFi receiver for the DT and xbox. Vodafone tech support were helpful enough suggested I test the modem direct to a laptop. And said if it was the same as the DT speeds on the HP they would replace the modem, as that result would suggest a modem fault

    Exactly what I'd expect from them, they made you prove it's not their problem but a problem with your own setup ;)
