Winter Sun options

Hi all. I am hoping to get some Winter sun and I'm not sure where to start as I've never booked a holiday. I will be going on my own and was thinking of the Canary Islands as a possible destination or is there any others in a similar price bracket? I went on a family holiday to Lanzarote 20 years ago during November and the weather was quite good. I can depart at fairly short notice, from late November onwards.

I would like to go somewhere where the age profile of other holidaymakers is 25-40. I wouldn't be too into partying so that's not essential, just want to get away and relax but if there's nightlife there that's great. Is it best to book with a UK website or an Irish one? Any groups that specialise in this type of Winter sun holiday?

I would appreciate any advice people could give me.

    Hi,
I believe your best bet for Winter Sun in Europe will be the Canary Islands. Nowhere in mainland Europe will be that hot, while the Canaries can get to mid 20s. In your situation I would be looking at booking the flight and accommodation separately as you are a lone traveller (travel agents will add a significant supplement). Ryanair for flights and Trivago for a hotel. However, I would recommend booking a small villa/apartment from the likes of Homeaway.co.uk, you'll get a decent price in the Winter months on a single room apartment.

I have been to Tenerife, in Playa de las Americas, and found it to have most of what you're looking for. That whole area encompassing PdlA, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje would be ideal, having plenty of nightlife, shops, restaurants and nice beaches. You can avoid the over exuberance of the party areas, namely Veronicas Strip, if you want!!

We are off to Corralejo in Fuerteventura soon which also looks lovely, with a more relaxed vibe.

Thanks very much Indestructable for your reply and the detail within it. I really appreciate it. Tenerife sounds great and is kinda the scene I was hoping for. I was thinking that I'd need to book flights separately alright but I was stumped as to what to do for accomodation.

The concept of Winter sun always appeals to me more than going in the Summer especially when the weather is lousy here.

Another query, what are the main nationalaties that tend to holiday in Tenerife if you know?

My preference would always be for self catering, I like to have clothes washing facilities in the apartment, but there are lovely hotels also. Depends on personal preference and budget I suppose.

Oh yes it is always nice to get away from the long cold nights for a while.

There are a huge number of nationalities but mainly British, both ex-pats and holidaymakers alike. Also lots of Irish, some German and Russian too. You can find some lovely local bars and restaurants too, though not as common. There is a healthy mix, but perhaps not a huge amount of Canarian culture in PdlA.
