on emissions., actually it says smoke test. . (thought this used to say emissions )

    anyway, it says smoke. .
should be below 2.5, but failed at 2.66.

its a 2.2 diesel doing shag all mileage, its mainly a second vehicle around the house for farming, and the spare car.
so I'm 99% sure its a a lack of use issue, well i have to start there before adding money to look at other issues etc.
I had this issue before with a car, and the nct guy told my wife to go and get your husband drive it hard and come back to us. which i did, and it flew the test.

apart from the need to drive it in 4 gear and a few long journeys, what's the best additive to add to the tank,

I have some of this below, but i don't think its what i need.
i see Dipetane mentioned a lot, but halfords seem to be out of stock.

    any thing else ?

    http://www.halfords.ie/motoring-travel/engine-oils-fluids/fuel-oil-additives/millers-diesel-power-ecomax-500ml

PS, would u believe i thought it would fail on this and i know i should have prepared and parked up the car for a week and used the Jeep, but . . ahhrrrrggg. couldnt be arsed swapping child seats etc. . lol:cool:
ive a track rod end to replace anyway.

I let the diesel tank run down to a quarter tank and then put in a full bottle of red ex and drive it until it's near empty. Always does the trick

Fresh tank of diesel, diptaine (go to any autofactors for it) and give the engine a good roasting. On the day of the test, take it for good 30 minute drive beforehand and arrive 5 minutes before your test date so the engine is still hot when being tested. Your only marginally above the limit so you should get through it next time if you follow the above.

Forget Dipthane, Redex or any other fuel based laxative. You've answered your own conundrum in your post OP. Take the car out on a good road and gun it hard in the low gears. Your exhaust is full of soot from pooting around and just needs a good blast to clean it out. If anything could or should be done, an new air filter and an oil change will help. At 2.66 you're very close to passing :)

we used this on a 98 ford galaxy 1.9 with 480,000 miles on clock to get through nct,the amount of soot left on the ground while using this as it does what it says.use 1 can on 1/4 tank of fuel and feel the difference immediately.

car was sold on at 550,000 miles due to new rules about taxis.

Petrol = emissions test. Diesel = smoke test.
Think it has always been like that.

Get a good injector cleaner for diesels like BG244K, then take it for a good long hard drive.

Most motor factors has Dipetane, give a few locals a ring.
Throw a whole bottle in with a half tank fuel and drive it like you stole it for a few days.

Mug full of kerosene into a half tank, will be absolutely fine then.

Limit is 3.00 on turbo diesel no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,581 ✭✭✭greasepalm

dipetane will only increase your levels as it needs to be out of the tank and not in it,hence why i said powerkleen will be an instant clean as dipetane cleans over time and would not use it on failed nct.what damage can kerosene do on a newer car?

I think it used to be, i noticed when i did my NCT in March and was putting my pass sheet in my folder where i keep them all, that the one this year had a lower limit to previous years.

Was told by Nissan mech to put in twice the dose of depitane

Limit 2.5, failed at 2.66 passed then with .23

Now i also used this as my main car for 8/10 days. Getting 50km a day spin.
    Passed and happy out

So it was depitane you used in the end.

A couple of mugs of petrol in a low tank and a good burnout on a straight road then top up the tank after the test.
