Nissan X-Trail CVT?

I have posted here a few times but really have decided after a lot of research to go with 7 seater X-Trail. Like the look and very similar in driving to the Qashqai I have.....I would buy Qashqai if they had 7 seater version

I know there was massive issues with the automatic Qashqai and just wondering if there is similar problems with the X-Trail?

Has anyone got one? How are they to drive etc?

    Thanks

The current X-Trail is the exact same as the current Qashqai mechanically, the X-Trail just replaced the previous Qashqai+2.

CVT gearboxes are the work of the Devil. Slightly better than the French automated manual "Auto" gearboxes, but only slightly.

Qashqai & X-Trail CVT versions were pulled from sale shortly after launch due to major issues with the gearbox. Available again now so they must have sorted whatever issue it was, but I still wouldn't because all CVT's are just terrible to drive.

What exactly is your point here?

In regards terrible to drive? what exactly do you mean? clunky gear change? slow performance?

I had a quick look around but no auto X_Trail in garages I checked so just wondering why it is terrible?

Unlike a normal Auto which has gears and automatically changes between them, a CVT works differently and raises the revs on the car to accelerate.

The response from a CVT when you put your foot down is no where near as instant as a normal auto, and it's just not an enjoyable driving experience.

CVT boxes sort of work with big engined cars for comfy long distance driving - last one I drove was an A5 3.0Tdi and that wasn't terrible, but with small engines (1.6 in the X-Trail) they are just awful.

I thought it was pretty clear. They are both the same car, same engines, same switch gear, same drive train, same gearboxes etc. The X-Trail is basically a 7 seater version of the X-Trail.

You post saying the X-trail has replaced the just replaced the Qashqai+2. This is incorrect. Nissan decided not to bring out a Qashqai+2 new version and just bring out a 7 seater X-Trail version. The standard 5 seater X-Trail is also available. And if you compare the X-Trail 5 seater to Qashqai 5-seater there is some subtle difference. The X-Trail is larger than the Qashqai been the main one. So this information is incorrect.

Also what has this information got to do with the gearbox? Do you have any experience of the X-Trail automatic gearbox?

    Hi R.O.R

Thanks for the info, have done a good bit of research over last few hours and a few people refer to the revs and the CVT gearbox can be loud.....

As car will mostly be used for school runs/M50 rush hour hell and motorway driving to Cork/Galway/Belfast etc I think the automatic might be ok.

I have the Qashqai at the moment with 1.6 diesel engine and manual. Its not like I use it for high performance driving. I guess based on the requirement the CVT won't be too bad....

I checked a few reviews and a good few are similar to below: http://www.rte.ie/lifestyle/motors/reviews/2014/0528/620186-nissan-x-trail/

We drove both manual and automatic versions – with the ‘XTronic’ auto (stepped CVT) providing the most stress free, if a little dull, motoring. The auto is perfect for family users, especially on stressful school runs!

It's the same gearbox, engine etc. the information is valid for both cars.

Again I am aware of that but he didn't provide any information in regards to the actual question. The question was not if the Qashqai and X-Trail have the same engine

The question was in regards to the gearbox....

I will refer to question again

Has anyone got one? How are they to drive etc?

Sorry I thought that was pretty clear I wanted information on the gearbox and actual real life experience. Not pointless rubbish

Im not sure how you don't understand the relevance. Nice attitude btw.

    Your mincing words now.

The relevance is in your original post where you said you would buy a Qashqai if one was available with 7 seats. I simply stated that the X Trail is the 7 seater Qashqai because when Nissan launched the second generation Qashqai they stated that the new X-Trail 7 seater would replace the original Qashqai+2. The fact the X-Trail has a 5 seater option has no bearing on that so my information is correct. The X-Trail uses a stretched version of the Qashqai's platform but the only differences are with packaging, space and some cosmetics.

Anyway I'm out of this thread, it's not worth the effort.

Hurray :P:P:P Most people would have got the hint after the first pointless post was pointed out

You did managed to post 3 times in a thread on a CVT gearbox and not once post information on the actual question. I do admire that.....it does explain why you have over 28k posts on boards

Sorry I have an attitude because I pointed out that someone was filling up a thread with useless/pointless information?

I would be more concerned with the "know it all" attitude of a lot of posters on here. Seemingly filling up threads with pointless posts is there daily job

Can you explain the relevance of his/her posts?

Please note I asked about personal experience of driving a CVT gearbox. Not the spec sheet that anybody can read off the web

Going on SIMI stats, there only seems to be 7 automatic X trails registered in Ireland so far in 2015.
It's unlikely that you'll find someone on here that has one of them.

I'm not a big fan of CVT boxes either, especially on diesels. They kinda sound like a car where the clutch is slipping, the revs aren't always proportionate to the speeds the car is doing if you know what I mean.
I have driven cats that have stepped transmission more like a regular auto though, the Nissan may have this, I don't know.

A good spin in one should give you an idea. Failing that there may be YouTube videos of test drives.

In your situation, there aren't many serious rivals for the money that give you the 7 seats, auto box, potentially good resale value, for the money nissanare doing it for. so it would be worth chasing it up
It might be worth contacting Nissan Ireland either directly or through your dealer, as they may have a press car or demo available.

The post you responded to explicitly stated that the Qashqai and Xtrail shared the same gearboxes, with the added info that they share just about every other mechanical component. It would be useful information for most people, if its **** on the Qashqai, its not going to be magically better on the XTrail.

Thanks, I was thinking that was the route I would have to take. The few garages I have contacted so far only have manual.

I'd imagine any garage that will have one it will be on demo so make a few phone calls to a few Nissan dealerships outside Dublin also and you'll eventually find one. Failing that i'd say up north over the border would be your next move, bound to be more X-trails in the spec your after available there.

Id imagine any garage that has actually regged one as a demo in auto (Madness, given that new cars get €4k off at the moment, and its november, they'd lose their shirt) they would have it advertised on the likes of donedeal or carzone.

Given that the manual has outsold the auto this year by 100:1, I can't see a dealer demo-ing one.

Here's one that you could surely drive

    and another

Thanks, I am based in Dublin so bit of a trip....

I just wanted to check to see if anyone on here had either driven or owned one, but the looks of it that is a no so I will push one of the dealers locally to see if they can provide or it calls for road trip

As you mentioned I can see anything else in price range with 7 seats and auto....don't really want to move to people carrier yet:D

You'd be down to Ferrybank in a little over an hour and a half. It would give you a chance to get some alternative trade in prices for your Qashqai (if applicable)

There's a few qashaui cvts in Dublin on carzone. Would give a feel for the transmission at least.
