Car Insurance for Expats

    Hey guys,

I'm hoping someone has had some experience and can give me some advice. Basically I have moved to mainland europe and left my car in Ireland as I will be returning frequently enough that I will get the use out of it (I wont be driving in Europe ever). The trouble is that given the way car insurance has gone in Ireland over the past couple of years my premium is through the roof (back to what it was when I was on a provisional licence at 21). My circumstances haven't changed other than now I have more years no claims bonus and Im almost 30 so the increase is clearly as a result of changes in legislation and other factors in the insurance industry. I'm struggling to find a company in Ireland that insures expats (in Ireland) who are living abroad. Has anyone had any dealings with Irish car insurance companies when they have lived abroad?? Thanks for any help/advice offered.

Have you tried to get someone else to insure your car (declare to the insurer that they are not the owner) then list you as a named driver so that when you come back to ireland you can legally use the car.

Else depending on how long you are out of the country for transfer the car to someone else's name, get them to insure it with you as named driver. Of course in both scenarios you cannot make use of your NCB for this policy.

Final suggestion, ring a few independent brokers (not AA or Chill types) as they may be able to give you access to an Insurer or set up a structure for you that will work).

Thanks for the advice. I think the best bet is probably to get in direct contact with the brokers and see what they can offer me. My main concern is that I don't lose my NCB. Thanks again!!
