Hi everyone, I have a bit of a problem maybe someone could help me with. I have to go to Athlone tomorrow and I will have to stay overnight , my problem is I am due in work for six and I cannot take a sick day and I have already got tomorrow off. I am looking online and the the first bus and train seem to be at same time which is around the half eight mark. I do not drive my partner does but we are going to Athlone for her graduation and she will be having a few drinks so I cannot really ask her to get up at half four to drop me to work as it would be selfish and unsafe. I really just want to know if there is maybe an airport bus from Athlone that passes through Portlaoise at that time that anyone may know of. I know I could just not go but that is not really an option as I know my partner will want me there as it is a big day for her. So is there any way at all I could be there on time ? any help greatly appreciated.

I think to manage it on buses you'd spend the night travelling to Dublin Airport and then back down to Portlaoise.

Could you get a late start from work and make up the time some other day?

I already asked that, and apparently not I even thought of getting a taxi but it would cost me more than I earn in two days.

The Airport and Portlaoise are totally different directions from Athlone, so I'm struggling to think how you could imagine an airport bus would take that route.

The first service in that direction is the 05:20 train which would get you to Portarlington at 06:01. Unfortunately it would have to be a taxi from there to Portlaoise as the first train from Portarlington to Athlone is at 07:15.

Alternatively, take the 06:27 train from Athlone to Portarlington, arriving there at 07:09, and then the 07:15 train to Portlaoise arriving there at 07:25.

They are the only realistic options.

Sorry - I've just realised it's Saturday morning (was looking at the weekday timetable).

The first train is 08:25 unfortunately due to engineering works.

Maybe not stay in Athlone on the Friday night then if you have no way of getting to work the following morning... Look about getting a late bus or train back to Portlaoise on the Friday night.

Last train back to Portarlington on Friday is at 20:26 - it might be a bit on the early side!

probably better off not staying if I cannot get back on time, seems to be the only option.
