Cat locked herself in the loo, any ideas?

Hi I've been woken up by our cat , who is locked into the bathroom beside me.
The keys are in the lock, (a bunch of basta keys on a wire in the lock) and as she is a wagon for jumping at door handles to open/ close them.
I can see she was closed in there accidentally (most likely a family member- she goes in to drink water that is left out for the dog/ cat upstairs in the loo.
There is no way to open the window from outside, its on the 2nd floor of a typical semi D.
I am mindful that it's the middle of the night- and the walls are thin and they can hear the cat next door already most likely.
I don't really fancy spending about 100e on an emergency locksmith- should I try take the door off with screwdrivers? Or the lock off? Lucky for me its a cheap door. But i didn't plan on replacing it... Well whatever needs must, the kitteh needs out and i need in!
And I kind of need to have a bathroom in the house, like. Help! Thanks!

Slide a paper under the door and knock the key onto it and pull out.

Won't work if there's a bunch of keys.

OP have you tried all other room keys in the house?

All the keys are on a big bunch, which is locked in the loo lock.
    Unfortunately.

Is there a window open in the bathroom?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭vagazzled

No, open window mores the pity. This cat is Houdini, she could escape from a small upper window.
She has been confined to house the past few months after she vanished for a night. (We live 30m from the M50 so try keep the cats in)
    Poor thing is getting agitated.
She is now trying to undo her work, jumping at the lock to try open it- please God she slips it back!

Can you put a picture of the key up for us to see?

I'lll try put a pic up of my view from the landing.
I just googled & youtube'd for a while ,no luck at all.
Gave the door a cursory boot in me bovver boots, but no give at all. Ideally i'd rather not kick the door in, for all concerned sake. Poor Dougie is freaked out enough.

Actually, there is nothing really to 'see', i looked in the lock and can just about see the key that is locking the door normally, and can see a bit of the strand of blue wire the builders left all the keys on. I was daft to leave them in a bunch like that.
There is no other means of leverage or openings or anything, its a newish door & lock.
I think ill be calling the locksmith before breakfast. :(

If it's a standard Basta, there's a chance your neighbours bathroom key will work as well.

Thanks fior the idea, but the key being in the lock at one side would stop a key going in the other side. :(
So i have really no means of doing anything, unless it was something clever with magnets.

Ok stick up a pic so we can see what kind of lock it is. I don't get how she locked herself in...surely she didn't turn the key?? !

If its a cheap light door and it opens inward, then chances are you'll kick it in surprisingly easily. With 1 step back apply full force kick with flat part of shoed foot close to lock. The lock should snap first time. If the door opens out toward you then this will not work.

Hi, yes, she locked herself in, she was 'shut in by accident in to main (and only!) bathroom on the landing. Inside the bathroom the whole set of indoor pasta keys are on a wire ring in the lock. She is always opening doors by jumping on the lock, and she managed to turn the key- its pretty easy to turn that key. I never imagined this scenario though.
Yeo, cheap light job , gave it a boot , no give yet. I'm a girl, you guys can lift twice yer weight, i'll put me docs back on and try again, not trying to hold the handle down.
Not so worried about noise now, cat was asleep their for a while, but she's awake and miaowing again.
Why do I ALWAYS get into weird bathroom scenarios. Im just glad I've cash on hand and knowing it could be a whole lot worse.

I can't see that pic for some reason.
Anyway, she's a right little madam being able to turn a key!

Sorry op, I can't think of anything. I'd say either a good strong kick to the door (do you have any hunky neighbours?!) or the locksmith are your only options. The little wagon!!!

Haha the little wagon is right. You have to laugh... I'm just thankful this did't happen last year when I was as broke as a joke an in college.
Had a look at our other door frames, and as they were all replaced in the last 2 years the frames and lock-holes are all good and solid, and from this side its got no give. I'll try embed the photo, thanks.

If you are desperate maybe you can use the neighbours loo.

When you get the cat out, have the lock changed to something like this: http://www.handleking.co.uk/cubicle-toilet-lock-pack-satin-stainless-steel-c6501s - the lock can be opened from the outside using a coin or the back of a key, but can't be opened accidentally.

Otherwise, the next time it could be a small child or an unconscious person locked in the bathroom.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions guys.
Locksmith is on his way out, 70e, a lesson learnt for sure.
I was thinking myself it could have been much worse. The keys were only put there very recently as we had an impromptu houseguest for a week, they were safely away before this.
