Open fire smoke in room

I got my chimney cleaned there recently, the chimney cleaner (who appears reputable and was actually recommended on boards), told me there was a lump of mortar up the chimney he needed to take off. Before I even had a chance to question him he had removed it with a drill thing (some contraption woth a loop on it). The piece of morter fell down the chimney and was about 5" x5".

If he hadn't done it without my permission I would have probably told him to leave it, Ive had my chimney cleaned before many times and never did anyone mention this to me.

The thing is now when I light a fire the living room is smelling smokey as if some smoke is being blown back, is it possible he's damaged the chimney? Could anyone help?

Get him back to have a look. Did he have an inspection camera?

Get him back. Chimney might be leaking. A few smoke pellets or whatever they use now might show up problem.

Was on contact with chimney cleaner, nothing to do with the mortar being removed thankfully, more than likely cold chimney.
