If travelling with my girlfriend on the train, is there much space on the two seats with the little table, or are you better off taking two seats in the four seat area with the bigger table, but then not knowing who you are going to sit opposite?

The two seats may well be better as you have a bit more privacy and nobody to kick your ankles under the table :)

The four seater has more room. Just sit opposite your girlfriend it's easier.
