Pope Francis advises Gypsies to 'stop bringing shame on their culture through crime'

The Pope has told gypsies not to ‘fight’ or ‘swindle’ and ordered them to always send their children to school.

Pope Francis told a group of thousands of Roma, Sinti and other travelling people, from all over Europe, to respect the law and avoid bringing shame on their culture through petty crime.

At a gathering in Rome, Francis condemned ‘centuries’ of discrimination against Europe's gypsies, he said they must do their part by respecting the law and sending their children to school.

‘Don’t give the media and the public reason to think badly of you,’ he said.

Gypsies who professed themselves to be Christians must, ‘avoid everything that is not worthy of the word: falsehood, fraud, swindles, fighting’, he warned.

I actually mentioned this in another thread recently, I didn't think he would actually go ahead and do it!
Maybe he'll take the opportunity to remind them that faction fighting, slash-hook attacks, mutilating of horses and dogs, barbaric torture of vulnerable elderly people, as well a whole host of other repugnant crimes are not very Christian.

    Just sayin'.

Well it looks like we're finally making a small bit of progress and people are finally addressing one of the root problems within the travelling and gypsy community, instead of blaming society as usual.

He also stressed the need to send the children to school where they can receive a proper education. See, this is how you solve the problem-by encouraging integration, and educating people to the fact that a culture of criminality in sections of the travelling community is no longer acceptable in this day and age. The 'progressives' over in RTE and the Irish Times must be fuming now that their narrative has been spoiled by a dose of reality.

It appears the last taboo of political correctness has been smashed-that all cultures are sacred and cannot be criticised. The sooner we have this open debate, the better.

    Well done Pope Francis.

Edit: Some mods will be looking for an excuse to close this thread, if you have a point to make please do it professionally. Don't tar everyone with the same brush.

He's right of course and only stating the obvious, but to the minds of some respect and integration only flow one way ,when in fact they are a two way street.
The Migrants rights groups were on the radio this morning discussing the importance of integrating the arriving Syrian refugees, by ensuring (rightly) their access to housing, education, family reunification etc. In other words, what's expected of us, but not a word about what might be expected of them to facilitate integration.

If political correctness ensures that two way junction only has traffic lights in one direction, car crashes are inevitable.

Tbf, you probably shouldn't have posted it in AH in that case.

Probably THE most progressive pope well see for some time.
However, I doubt his advice will make much difference. He's just saying what about a million other rational people are saying.

Thread being closed. There have been way too many threads similar to this lately that have resulted in closure due to a lack of civility.
I don't see this one going any differently even with the OP's bolded note.
