    hey,
So I have a 2005 BMW 320i e90 and about 2 weeks ago an engine light came on and the car went into limp home mode!
I got a friend to put it on his computer and these faults came up
    *VVT Sensor
    *VVT Motor
    *oxegen sensor
he wiped the faults and the car was ok for about 2 days then the same problem again, this time just the VVT sensor and motor

I have had so many different opionions on what several mechanic type friends thought the actual fault was before i went just throwing money at the car so i end up going with the most reliable 1 of them who had a good loook around the car and came to the diagnosis od the VVT sensor which i went ahead and bought for a massive 460e plus labour and diagnostics this problem now stands me over 1000e and i am still exactly where i started with it :(
so if anyone has maybe had the same trouble or can recommend someone or somewhere that can help please let me know, any advice welcome:)

    Cheers

Do you have the error codes? Which sensor was changed?

Had the same on that model / engine and it was the eccentric cam position sensor. I remember it was expensive to buy but thought it was around 150 for the part.

When I unplugged the sensor there was oil inside the connector, this oil comes from inside the rocker cover and through the sensor itself. If this sensor wasn't checked, definitely worth looking at.

Your right not to keep throwing money at the problem.

This is what's going on here:

Those eccentric shaft sensors get damaged by oil leaking past them due to failure of a little seal. It's usually fairly apparent to the eye. It can also be a faulty actuator motor.

    Hey,

Yeh the original error codes where...

p1006 VVT guiding sensor parity error
p1014 VVT reference sensor parity error
    p1050 VVT control circuit

p1062 was flagged and put the car into limp home mode

Mechanic said ECU was commanding the VVT motor fine
but said after fitting the "eccentric shaft sensor" what cost me 460e that the faults still coming up where "signal parity errors"

He had cleaned the sensor originally because there was oil at the plug but that didnt work so he thought maybe it was gone and to replace it but that still hasn't worked!???

There are a few things that could be interfering with the electrical signalling to/from the eccentric shaft sensor, like short-circuiting, earth problems, and even a faulty shaft motor. You're going to need someone handy with a multimeter and maybe an oscilloscope, as opposed to a parts-swapping merchant.

Definitely time to start looking at it with a scope or multi-meter. I'm going out on a limb here, but as the ECU is not happy with both signals I'd be looking at the power supply(s) to the sensor. I don't have the wiring diagram in front of me, so i'm not sure if anything is powered from the supply to that sensor.

Any recommendations on someone or somewhere that could help me with that!? 😊
