Tuning two cottages into one

Hi Everyone, We bought a 100 + year old semi detached cottage last year in Westmeath, we got it cheap as the cottage joined onto it is derelict, we've since moved in and we are now thinking of buying next door and making it into one house does anyone know would we need planning permission to do this? thanks
