2008 Ford Mondeo Alternator problem?

    Hey all,
Not sure if this is allowed here, mods feel free to delete if not.

Yesterday I started my 2008 Mondeo(1.6 petrol) and the red battery light came on, I drove it for about 20km and the electrics all faded, I drove it about another 2km and it eventually went dead and I had to pull over.
My dad jumped me(it took a few times) and I drove to his house(750m away), I left it running and it was fine, then I turned it off and restarted a few times and it was ok.

As I was leaving to go a few minutes later with my dad following, it wouldn't start again, no electrics, just a ticking sound.

Does anyone know if this sounds like an alternator ? I'm very, very low in cash so does anyone know if it'll be expensive?

Thanks for the help guys, I will be getting roadside assist to take it to the garage from my parents in the morning.

It's a charging/battery issue I'd say. You might be looking at a alternator rebuild or a new battery?

    Budget maybe €200 incl.

I can check the voltage on the battery with my mulitmeter tonight and go from there.
    Thanks for the reply.
    200 wouldn't be too bad.

Yep. If you get c.14v whilst running it suggests the battery isn't holding charge.

If it won't start, Do I jump it and then check voltage?

What sort of driving do you do and is it keyless start?

No it's not keyless. It's driven every day but can vary from just around town to between 70-200km round trips, motorway once or twice a week but mostly national roads,Is that what you mean?

Yep. Use another car/booster and check the owners manual first. Don't try to bump start it though as that can damage the cat.

    Should defo be charging so.

I know my o/h dad car was getting drained as its keyless and wasn't getting enough of a drive to charge and also dash light was staying on.

That sounds like the alternator alright. I had one fail on me exactly the same way.

I was driving on the motorway and the first sign I had that there was an issue was when the radio started hopping around stations and the died, followed by the dash lights dimming the and car eventually cutting out.

A jump start gives the battery a small charge and then the car starts OK but running it drains the battery fairly quickly.

One of the slip rings and brushes were well worn when I stripped the alternator.

I brought it to the motor factor and he suggested starting with the battery so I changed it and it's starting and driving for now.. I'll avoid long drives for a while and see how it goes, he said it was still the original ford battery and was only registering 4v
