    Hi there,

I just posted this in DIY forum but think its betters suited here.

We bought a house 6 months ago and painted it all magnolia just to get us started fresh.

Now we're tackling decorating and have never really painted before. What brand(s) would ye recommend?

We were looking at painting above the fireplace and the hall/stairs/landing area to start with.

I liked dulux dapple grey for the hall and crown liquer for above the fireplace. I also liked woodies own brand colour paradise shores but not sure if their paint is any good.

Also would matt or soft sheen be best?

    Thanks smile.png

If you can afford it Colour Trend paint. We painted our house in Dulux before we moved in three years ago due to budget. At the same time a friend was renovating and painted their entire house in Colour Trend. Their house looks fantastic, ours needs a complete repaint. The next time I will be painting in Colour Trend or Farrow & Ball if budget permits ☺

I personally prefer a matt finish.

Whatever you do, get samples and apply to your walls.

Sometimes what you see is not what you get.

I have tried both Dulux and Colourtrend only to find that the applied colour does not match the swatch.

Spent hundreds on full cans and samples.

One of the biggest disappointments included the Dulux Dapple Grey, which i thought was the perfect colour.

Now everything is matt white instead.

Colour trend is great paint and the soft sheen wipes clean very easily. I used a Dulux kitchen paint in my kitchen and it does not clean anywhere as easily as the Colour trend. I used a Dulux moda colour in one of the bedrooms and that is great paint too. I have dapple grey in one bedroom and it's nice and soft. Don't waste your money with anything own brand.

Thanks for all the replies. Ya I have loads of testers so narrowing it down. I painted a white patch and then put the same testers over it and the colours are so different to over the magnolia!

Ya in the shop the were saying get mid sheen for the hall as it's wipeable opposed the the matt but I think the matt is probably better?

I don't know if it's better. Other than the kitchen which is matt, every other room is soft sheen I think. Easily wipeable paint is a big plus - I don't have kids but I do have a big dog who likes to brush up and lean on the walls and it's amazing how dirty they get :(

Fleetwood is one of the best IMO.
I'd personally stay away from store-brand paints.

I've had the complete oppositr experience with fleetwood. Bought a 'one coat' ceiling paint that needs 4-5 coats to actually cover anything and it was the gloopiest, thickest, most horrible thing i've ever painted with.
