Our pump is 8 yrs old and is in daily use supplying two showers (not simultaemously). Normally the pump kicks in when the water dial is turned whilst in the shower. About 2 months ago it failed to start and instead of the normal thump followed by the sound of the pump we are getting a hum, it is audible but nothing compared to the sound of a normally functioning unit. We turn it off and then after a little while it works normally again. However the frequency of this failure is increasing and is now once or twice per week.

Following some online research I removed the cover and inspected the starting capacitor and there are no visible signs of wear.

Has anyone any experience with this or could you tell me where I can source a replacement starting capacitor?

From your description of how the pump is behaving the capacitor is breaking down and failing. They don't have to show any signs, although sometimes they do rupture.
A lot of the plumbing suppliers now carry suitable capacitors in the Aqua Flow packaging, if you have a 1.5 or 2.0 bar pump you will need a 7µF (microfarad) or a 10µF for a 3.0 bar.

Thanks for taking the time and interest K Flyer. The internet can be a terrific place but only so long as people are generous enough to share

    Kind regards

    Thanks again for the advice.

I fitted a new capacitor and had no problems since.

FYI I called a nationwide chain and the were looking for €40+VAT for a replacement. Following a PM here I was given the name of 'Flow Pumps' in Walkinstown were I paid €20 total.
