Bay leaf disintegrated?

I made a stew last night, and popped 3 (dried) bay leaves in at the start. At the end of the 2+ hour cooking time, I noticed that 1 of the leaves appeared to have disintegrated and I had to fish it out in several pieces with a fork. The other 2 were fine. I can only assume that leaf was past its best by, is that what "old" bay leaves do when they die?

Nope, just individual. Incidentally there's a massive difference in the taste of dried bay and fresh bay, the latter being much more vibrant and 'spruce' like
