Those are 2 quite different cars. One is a large saloon and the other is a 2 door coupe..

The 3.0L probably won't return much more than 26mpg in auto, maybe up to 30mpg on motorway spins if you're lucky.

I know someone with a 523i E60 and its an absolute dog on petrol and his is a manual.

I think some of those are actually a bit cheaper to tax post 08 since the co2 is not terrible on them.

I own an E90 and much prefer the drive of the 3 series over the E60, that said the E60 is a fine car too just more of a large cruiser.

The only issues I know of on the petrols is them going through ignition coils and possibly injectors but that may only apply to the later efficient dynamics models.

    E39 525i auto will average 30 mpg late 30s motorway cruising 120 ~ 130 kph no problem

Much more efficient than manual version

Newer model I'm not so sure but I can't see it being worse mpg wise than older models

This 100 times it all depends what you want from the car.

I owned an e90 330i m sport fantastic car a car that loved to be driven that felt nimble and loved being thrown into a bend mpg I averaged low 20's.

I now own an e60 530d it's a fantastic car in its own right but much more of a cruiser munching up motorway miles at ease.
