Rusting Boiler ?

    Hi,
Just got a new boiler in the house (say 2 months ago) and I think it is rusting inside. The hot water and the water in the toilet is a light brown rusty colour. The cold water is clear. The overflow went for a few hours and there is a distinct rusty stain outside.

The plumber says that the water in the area causes it and unless we get a filter the problem will persist.

    Any thoughts?

Sounds like a bad plumbing setup to me.
Are you talking about the overflow from the expansion tank? What happened the old boiler? Do you have a back/stove boiler?

When you say "Boiler", do you mean the hot water tank (cylinder) in your hot press, or do you mean the Gas or Oil Boiler that heats the radiators as well as the hot water?

sounds like a split coil in the cylinder to me

The hot water and the water in the toilet should be completely separate and neither should be directly connected to the boiler. It is possible that it is unrelated, it's also possible that the plumber has cross connected pipes.
Maybe the plumber could have stirred up dirt in the attic tank.

The normal setup is that the kitchen cold tap and the attic tank get mains water, all other cold taps and all toilets get tank water and all hot water comes from the tank via the cylinder in the hot press. The cylinder is heated by a coil which is fed from the boiler. The boiler water and the hot water never mix. The hot water only remixes with the cold water if the cylinder overheats.
