Berlingo 1.9 engine knocking

    Was driving yesterday and got a very strong burning smell then engine started making a loud metallic noise which gets louder as you rev. Any ideas.

    Video is private so I can't see it. Try changing the settings on youtube there.

    Sounds like the timing belt is hitting the cover to me.

    Video working now alright.

    Hard to know what it really sounds like on the video.


    What's the oil level and quality like? Is it serviced regularly?

    It was serviced a month a go. Oil level is bang on.

    Sounds like it might be big end noise but hard to tell on the video.


    You said it started with a burning smell I wonder did the auxiliary belt slip for a while causing the smell but that caused damage to the belt which is causing the noise now.

    I will get a mechanic to look at it today and see what the outcome is, I don't want to spend money on it as I'm not that keen on it but might be my cheapest option at present. :(
