if you were in the 1000 pto mode and the tractor was ticking over at about 750-800 rpm. then what speed would the 1000 pto be doing roughly. I was hoping someone might have a digital readout from their tractor and know.

    Around 460 or 480 iirc
Anyway whatever revs your 1000 setting is at say 2200rpm, half that (1100rpm) and you will have your 500rpm at the pto

Will all this not depend on gear ratios (IE different every make??)

It's a fixed ratio. Is it not written on the rev counter?

But the ratio will be different for different gearboxes
Either way it'll be exactly twice the 540 as they are just driven off the same gear and the 1000 gear is half as many teeth as the 540 teeth

If its doing 1000rpm say at 2200revs

    1000 / engine revs at pto 1000 * 800 = pto revs at engine 800
