Seperating and welfare payments

A friend of mine is seperating and concerned about how she can survive finacially. For now she is staying with friends and may not need Rent Allowance. She is legally married and I am not sure if they will get a divorce.

She is not an internet user and I offered to ask here for advice on any Social welfare payments she might get until she can support herself.

    Thanks

Does she own or part own a house/the family home?
What age group is she in?
Does she have dependent children (under 18 or even under 7) ?
    Is she working?
If not has she worked recently and/or is she looking for and available for full time work?

I am pretty sure she does not own or part own the house.
She's over 50, not sure exact age but under 60, I think.
    No dependent kids
She does a few hours part time teaching a week but that could end.
She is available and looking for work.

She can look for a Jobseekers payment.
Depending on her PRSI contributions over the years (in particular 2013/2012/2014) and the class of PRSI she may get JSB ((benefit) but I'm thinking that's unlikely.
    More likely to be Allowance
Allowance is means tested. This is where her interest in a house she's not living in comes into play, also her teaching income and savings shares etc
Any day she's teaching she won't get a payment as she's not available or looking for work on that day.
Even if she is deemed eligible the max payment is 188
Rent supplement or HAP is difficult to get, depending on which county she is in different limits will apply and her rent contribution will be at least 35 per week
Separation can be expensive adding to the stress
That's why many couples who would otherwise split remain in semi misery tolerating one another for years

She needs to get a job.

An interest is a house that she's not living in is likely to mean that she receives very little from a means tested benefit.
