Heating system noise

We've got a combi boiler and when we put the heat on, as it gets to bring quite hot, it makes a noise not dissimilar to a car engine.

The noise isn't near the boiler, it's at the other end of the house, beneath the floorboards. I can touch the radiator there and feel the vibrations.

Ordinarily I turned the heat off and it would stop. With the colder weather, I put the heat on a timer for waking up and it now seems like it makes the noise for a minute or so, then dies down.

    Any ideas?

Pipes in the floorboards not cliped I'd say

Do you have Thermostatic Radiator Valves?

Yes, we had them installed a couple of years back.

Are they fully open or set at a mid point, e.g. 2,3 or 4.
If so, next time you get the noise individually turn off each valve to see if you find one that when closed stops the noise.
It may only be a faulty valve head (the bit with the numbers) that needs replacing.

I think they're fully open. I'll have a look later. Thanks for the advice

Hi K Flyer, the noise started this morning so I turned the thermostatic valve, which was set half way, to off, and the noise stopped immediately.

So what are the next steps?

KFlyer probably knows more about the solution, but I would swap that TRV head around with one of the others.

If the noise starts again, see if doing the same with the new head stops it. Or maybe you will have to turn the same one as before to stop it.

Either way it will identify whether it's the head or the valve that the head is attached to.

Well done to KFlyer on identifying the problem.

As Wearb says, you could swap the head with one from of the other radiators and see if the chatter stops. If it does then you may only need a new replacement radiator TRV head.
