Pope Francis has invited 400 Irish travellers to the Vatican for an audience with him to remember the victims of the Carrickmines fire

Hundreds of members of the Irish Traveller community, including relatives of victims of the Carrickmines fire disaster, will have an audience with Pope Francis on Monday in the Vatican.

A spokesperson for the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin said the meeting has been arranged as part of a much bigger assembly of nomadic people to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first ever visit by a pontiff to a gypsy camp made when Pope Paul VI travelled to Pomezia on the outskirts of Rome in 1965.

A spokesperson for Marian Pilgrimages told RTÉ News that up to 400 Travellers with roots in Ireland are expected to travel.

Traveller sources said a number of relatives of the deceased from the Carrickmines fire disaster will be participating.

I think given how religious Travellers tend to be this is a nice gesture. Though I'm also aware the Pope is planning on visiting here soon too so perhaps his PR merchant sees the tragedy as an opportunity to curry favour with the larger Irish flock?

Maybe he can house them over there. With any luck they'll claim asylum.

An awful pity most of them are unemployed. Must be tough for them to find the money for travel and accomodation.

And sure if it doesn't need a coat of Tarmac I'm sure they'd recommend a power wash.

Its an awful pity the Pope couldnt have made a financial gesture along with his message of condolence to the travellers.

He could have asked Blackrock College which owns a lot of land in Blackrock to donate a couple of acres to house the families temporarily.I wonder how much land in Dublin is in the possession of the religious orders,I know they have sold a lot of it off to Developers. They can put their money where their mouths are and stop telling the rest of us to be generous and understanding when the Church is doing nothing practically to help.

Who is paying for the travellers to travel on the pilgrimage, its probably St Vincent de Paul.

They are very religious so this is a nice gesture.

I hope he'll actually talk to some of them whilst the cameras follow the whole scene. I'd actually pay to see his face the moment he realises that he can't understand a single word they are saying

Maybe he'll take the opportunity to remind them that faction fighting, slash-hook attacks, mutilating of horses and dogs, barbaric torture of vulnerable elderly people, as well a whole host of other repugnant crimes are not very Christian.

    Just sayin'.

The Pope is more interested in the fact that the travellers dont use contraceptives, that makes them good catholics, the rest doesnt matter.

He'll regret it when he has to pay them disturbance money to leave.

I hope he has all his valuables locked away in a safe.

I would hate to be on that plane with four hundred travellers.

How will the staff sort out the passports, they are all called Martin and Winnie McDonagh.

They pay as much and as hypocritical a lip service to Catholicism as most alright.

They paid or someone paid thousands of euros for expensive caskets and luxury black limousines the whole way to Wexford and none of them would step forward to take their family members in.

The council stumped up the cost of the new mobile homes, there is something wrong here.

I would love to go to Rome and I cant afford the plane ticket or hotel accommodation.

Many of them are deeply religious in fairness, even the few who are involved in crime tend to be.

Well considering he was supporting Kim Davis and personally met her. You know the bat **** crazy women from Kentucky who refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, as it was against her religion. Although Kim herself had been divorced 4 times!

Its nice to be the Catholic Church being consistent at something. Which is turning a blind eye to people being hypocritical in their religion. But still publicly supporting them anyway.

They can shack up with the Roma community in Italy then,Pope Francis wont be putting them up,thats for sure.

I am thinking of the State of St Peters Square after they leave,it wont be a pretty site.
