If anyone could be of help diagnosing why 1.4 golf sounds like a diesel when ticking over, it would be very appreciated!.

The noise is very intermittent, once the engine is warmed up it tends to go away and it will sound normal again.

Just when it is cold it sounds like a cross between a diesel and a rough lawnmower, car feels dead when I hit the accelerator when it is noisey also.

Mechanic seems to think it might be a valve or something like that, that is struggling to open.

Sounds a lot like the effects of petrol stretching.
Take out spark plugs and look for carbon buildup

Thanks for the advice. Mechanic thought it was either the effects of poor petrol or one of the valves struggling to function. Changed the oil and filter yesterday and mechanic added an engine treatment liquid to the oil.

Car has been quiet so far so it's a matter of waiting to see if problem comes back. Might check out the spark plugs to see if there's a carbon build up.

When was the oil last changed, OP? If a too viscous oil was used on the last change it makes it harder for the oil to get around so it sounds like a bag of spanners while it warms up.

Is the level up at the top mark on the dipstick too?

    It's not a late 90's/early 2000's is it?

To be honest, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's no different to an old man getting out of bed in the morning aching all over going, 'ah jaysis, me back' before he gets going.

    Duh!

Just saw you changed the oil yesterday.

I wouldn't bother with the plugs. They'd cause rough running if coked up. The fact it was noisy while cold would suggest they're fine.

It's a 04 mk5 golf, the ones that are as slow as a wet week. Oil had been changed at 147k miles and it only has 151k now. It's got it mojo back since the oil change yesterday. Hopefully it stays that way.

    4k miles a day?! Holy!

Seriously though, I'd say it's fine now.

Apologies! Last oil change was in July!

Golfie gets through big mileage every day!

That engine sounds like it has low oil pressure leading to noisy tappets. An oil pressure test would be a good idea. It probably needs the sump and oil pump pickup pipe cleaned out.
