Hey look, it's another rogue-like platformer with a retro art style...

    Wait, wait, come back!

Yes, it seems barely a week goes by without another rogue-like platformer with a retro art style, but this one is exceptional. The concept is simple - you're falling down a well and need to avoid / kill enemies in the process. You're also wearing a pair of gun boots for some reason.

As with most games of this sort, staying alive will prove a challenge for a good while, but what gives this game such an edge is its brilliant combo system. Touch the ground (which is needed to fully recharge your guns) and your combo ends, but manage to maintain a kill streak and you'll get incrementally better rewards. There's nuances - stomping enemies partially refills your ammo, 'time bubbles' allow you to maintain your combo while collecting upgrades - and it all makes for a very compulsive experience. Thankfully, it's best played in short bursts, with rounds rarely lasting more than a few minutes.

And it's only three euro. Plus there's a Virtual Boy palette available if you feel your eyes haven't bled sufficiently in recent times.

Also worth noting the game's website is a perfect explanation of how the game plays and looks.
