Can anyone recommend a good rice cooker?

Hi all ,

I am on the hunt for a rice cooker . I love the convenience of them . Just pop in the rice and water , go away and come back whenever for fluffy rice thats kept warm . Does anyone know a good model ? Dont want to break the bank but dont want to buy something that wont last either .

We have a Jamie Oliver pot, does perfect rice all the time, put rice in fill water up to a mark inside pot and blast in microwave for 5mins.

Just my two cents but, we use the rice cooker at home two or even three times a day. Having bought expensive ones in the past they last no longer so I wouldn't let price influence your decision. We currently have a "London Wok" which is 1.8L and used every day and we have a brand unknown 4L which gets used once or twice a week. The 1.8L is going strong for nearly a year and cost about €30 in Asia market on furry street.

Before you buy a rice cooker, perhaps checking what the base is would be a good idea. If it is aluminium you would really need to get them to check if it is safe. Teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water boiled on high heat in the cooker. If the solution turns milky its a big no no. Whether you are buying this rice cooker for yourself or for the family - the company selling you these things shouldn't back away from doing this test for you.

Found a great one

Its a brand called Tatung . They specialize in rice cookers with steel inner bowls . They are also meant to last a lifetime . I found it on ebay (be sure to order one that works with Irish power supplies or you'll blow the cooker). It looks like a Russian satellite and it gets almost daily use here . The rice that comes out of it is restaurant quality , fluffy and steamed .
