First marathon

Having trained for months for the Dublin marathon I ended up twisting my foot coming off a ladder at work. Stupid me. This was to be my first marathon. I was aiming for a sub 3:20 and it was looking like a real possibility. I don't know how long I will be out for but I'm guessing a month by the way it feels. My question is should I wait till next October or maybe a spring time marathon like Conamara? What are my options or what ones would you guys recommend as a first now? Have to say I'm devastated not able to run it now after all that training .

Depends on do you want to run your first marathon in Ireland? Connemara and Limerick are April and May and only spring options here. You have plenty to choose from on the continent like Barcelona, Rotterdam, Manchester plus loads more. Better weather elsewhere than Ireland to usually.

Thanks tang1 I never considered overseas.

If you don't mind doing a marathon outside the big city ones keep an eye on the Marathon Club site for the 2016 calendar.

East of Ireland marathons wud prob/defo suit u better (assuming ur dublin based) if ur going at 320 pace,.....not usuaslly many at that pace at d mci marathons..

I'd wait until Dublin next year. Or if you want to do a spring marathon go abroad.
Dublin is a better experience for a first-timer than the other Irish marathons.

Thanks guys. I guess I'm just disappointed of not able to run in Dublin when I came so far and need something to look forward too. I always wanted to have Dublin as my first Marathon but 2016 seems so far away now. Manchester sounds like a good one too

If it's worth anything I trained 3 times and failed to make start on either occasion cause of injury, I always wanted Dublin to be my first marathon to but think I may last that dream go. Hoping to make it to Rotterdam on 10th of April next year and sure if all goes well there DCM 16 might be in the pipeline then.

I would do Manchester in April really flat course great support,I did it this year and got my PB, if you were aiming for 3.20 sounds like you are in good shape so don't wait another year with that fitness plus Connemara is really hilly might not be enjoyable for your first one best of luck with what you decide to do.ðŸ႒ðŸ½ðŸ႒ðŸ½ðŸ႒ðŸ½ðŸ႒ðŸ½ðŸ႒ðŸ½ðŸ႒ðŸ½ðŸ႒ðŸ½ðŸ႒ðŸ½

Another shout for Manchester here 6781. Great support, and a really flat course. Really really flat!

Half thinking about doing a marathon and the Manchester Marathon wouldn't be bad timing but I thought I heard people suggesting that the course was short?

Was a big bone of contention after this year's race alright. It was discussed at length in a thread here but can't remember which one.

It's in the Rio 2016: who's looking to qualify thread. Claims Manchester could be up to 800m short.

I'm also looking to do one around March/April, obviously some like good weather but it might be better to have it a little cooler when your sweating buckets at the end. Paris looks a good one too. I must look into Manchester, thanks

You might like Barcelona so Irish_rat. 13th March 2016 afaik. Loved it when I did it.

When did you hurt your foot OP? Towards the end of your training I assume?

( otherwise a spring marathon may not be the wisest choice)

    Two weeks before DCM

So you've a good chunk of training done but have another month off your feet? Its probably best to have the foot checked out by a physio before committing to anything - Spring or Autumn.
If you were back running in early December then I don't see why you couldn't tackle a Spring marathon, I suppose it depends on what you want from it though

I think for a first...Dublin is hard to beat!!
Yes it might seem a long way away but it would soon pass.
Anyway Dublin would get my vote for your first......:-)

Jumping on this thread a little.

Been running on and off for the last 18 months or so completed a few 10ks and also the Wicklow 1/2 in March. Will also be doing the Clontarf 1/2 in a few weeks and thinking about getting my finger out and doing a full marathon next year.

Was originally planning on keeping the training up after Clontarf and potentially doing Belfast in May, I was specatcting in Chapelizod last week and speaking to a few folks I know who competed they were all raving about Dublin.

So the quandry is target Belfast or Dublin next year?

Does anyone who has competed both have comparisons of the 2? And is potentially doing both madness for a non marathon runner.

Should just add that I am averaging between 30-40k per week just now.

    Thanks for any input.

I have never done Belfast but I have had friends who did it a few years back. They weren't to pleased with the overall organization of the event. It may have changed since. There were areas of the course where they weren't sure which way to run (no stewards) and felt a little isolated. They have assured me there is no comparison with Dublin.... Stay injury free and anything is possible... :-)

Thanks for the info, I will get Clontarf out the way and try and keep to some sort of schedule over December/Jan and see how that fairs out.
