I have a generic 1.8kg extract kit in the attic. I was thinking about making it using water boiled with other grains, to add some body to it. has anyone done this? Would it work?

Should do. Steep up to about a kilo in 3L of water for 20 minutes at 60C.

I did this with my Craft Range wheat kit. Turned out great, really really happy with it. I doubt I'd do a kit again without doing some sort of extract. This is the recipe I used.
