I hope I've posted this in the right place.

I recently bought a car for the first time, its a second hand one. There was a mix-up with the change of ownership details on the sellers part and long story short, after buying the car on the 2nd of September I finally received the registration certificate this week after it was issued on the 16th of October. The car had tax up to August so will I be due to pay arrears for September or will I be paying from October onwards?

It depends on the exact transfer date over, so if it transferred over on the 2nd, or 29th of October, you owe from October onwards.

It transferred to my name on the 2nd of September, so it's just October onwards then?

    Same Situation as me.

Its the date that you signed the change of ownership form or logbook respectively regardless of when you got your official certificate of registration.

I signed the logbook on the 02/11/15 but I only received the updated logbook with my name on the 16/11/15 but I'm liable for tax starting from the 02/11/15.

So for you it would be the 02/09/15 on wards.

Yes, you will have to pay arrears for the full month of September.

The same would have been true if the date of transfer of ownership was the end of the month; you still owe for the whole month. Dishonest and unscrupulous individuals sometimes hold back changing the paperwork over for a few days if it puts the new owner into a new month.
