Redundancy

Hey there, I was just wondering what sort of notice you can be given for being made redundant? I see one of the reasons you can be made redundant is when someone higher qualified can be hired to do the job they are qualified for and also cover the job you have been hired to do. This will apply to me. But I will have about 7 months notice before I am let go. Will I still be entitled to redundancy? and therefore entitled to the state benefits straight after I get let go. Also to note, this person would be hired a number of months before I was let go and I would be training them on all the work I do. Hope that makes sense. Thanks

Sorry to hear about your job.

I was made redundant in 2011. You get 2 weeks pay per year of service as long as you have been 2 years or more in the job. If you get more a lump sum you will have to disclose to social welfare and this can delay your payment of €188 a week. IF you have a mortgage you can pay off some of it & you get payment right away.

On a personal note it does not seem like a great place to be when they tell you your being replaced & you have to show the new person the ropes. Could you not study nights or online to get this qualification? Also are there no other jobs in the company you could move too?

A person cannot be made redundant, only a position/role/job can. So if they're hiring someone else, and you're training them to do your job, then that's not redundancy it's something completely different and I'd be getting some advice pretty quickly.

If someone's role is no longer considered to be full time and is being merged with another role, the existing role becomes redundant.

I've seen it happen numerous times.

If a company offers a redundancy to say a milkman, and then in a letter following the offer they state that they are not making the position redundant, as they need a milkman, and that a redundancy situation does not exist.. What does that mean? Is it just a severance pay off for a cock up?

not exactly my case as a different profession but say i was an accountant technician and the company was hiring an accountant and they were going to do their job but also take over the role i was in. Thats the way its happening. theres no way for me to get the qualification needed without fulltime education. but if i will meet the criteria for redundancy then if I'm let go next summer i can sign on straight way and then be eligible for BTEA straight away too and could go to full time education to get this qualification. it seems that the position i hold seems to be being made redundant so to speak by the higher qualified role. but my concern is the fact that I'm being given so much notice that i won't be eligible for all that.

and thanks for all the replies...

You're still being made redundant, the timeframe is irrelevant.

You won't be eligible straight away for BTEA

"If you have been awarded statutory redundancy and are entitled to a qualifying social welfare payment immediately before you start the course you can get immediate access to the BTEA without any waiting period. You must take part in the BTEA scheme within one year of getting statutory redundancy and satisfy all the other conditions."

This is what it says on citizens information about the BTEA so i thought I would be

I would negotiate your package now, while they still need you. Otherwise you could resign at any time.
