I've to skim some moisture resistant plasterboard and always used pregrit PVA before skimming on them when in UK but can't seem to find locally any stores that sell it. Anyone know where I could get it even posted from somewhere here in Ireland.

Any PVA will do. But why not skim direct with multifinish?

does the word moisture resistand boards not signal an issue? plaster is obviusly made with water, you cant skim them without thistlebond

Here is the answer from LaFarge:
    "......
    Dear Sir

I confirm that no pre treatment is required before tiling moisture board.

In respect of the skimming, we do not recommend a skim finish on moisture board. There is no point using a moisture resistant product and covering it over with a non moisture finish. Also the skim does not adhere to the surface very well and there is a chance it will 'shell off'. However if you still decide to skim you will need to pva the board twice and skim on the second coat whilst still tacky.

    Regards

    Lafarge Plasterboard Ltd

Now, LaFarge are a French outfit where tape&joint with mud is the norm and rarely is skimming with plaster used.
I've been plastering a long time before Thistlebond etc came on the market and we just used Board Finish in the old days. Never heard of it shelling off.

If using a Carlite finish you just hit it with a 1:5 and when dry a 1:3 (PVA:Water). Start skimming whist still tacky.

I still own a house that I floated and set thirty years ago ........ no sign of plaster blowing. But advertising is advertising and getting the punters to part with their money is the order of the day. Gypsum companies the world over have got to keep producing newer products to keep the share price up. It is not always in the householders interest.

Some new product comes to the market and suddenly it is a must have.

I'll translate that ...... some new product comes on the market and the licence holders (after spending big dosh on producing it) declares that it is the bees knees to recoup and get into profit.

Cynical maybe, but I've been around ....... and am still spreading!
