    2.0L 110PS 280Nm

    or 1.6L 120PS 300Nm

Which is best for generally driving on motorway at 130km/h for say 2 hrs/day ?
Which would feel like "less effort" to drive ?
Does the 2 L compensate anyway for the lower PS or does it just use more fuel ?

are the cars different ages ? the 2.0l would be less stressed on the motorway.

Those are peak figures, they don't tell the whole story.

Could be a VW golf? Didn't they do a 2.0 110 for a while before the 1.6 came out?

the tiguan is a much nicer place to be. you're comparing cars not engines here and both of those will perform similarly but the VW is a nicer place to be.

Hard to call, I've never driven a 110 Tiguan. The 140bhp one is lovely though. All in all I'd prefer it to the crv.

The CR-V has a significantly better reliability index:

    http://www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/127

    *Assumptions made on model years

Possibly better resale as well depending on what exactly VW are going to do on the recalls:pac:

Wouldn't rate the Tiguan for motorway driving...While very comfortable and a nice driving position. ..I drove one from Athlone to connolly hospital in blanch and back...used 1/3 of a tank of fuel....6 speed box and all

There's a 140PS 2WD BMT model in our fambly, getting mid 50s mpg on motorway driving.

The Honda 1.6 engine is very frugal and doesn't seem hugely underpowered.. (I drive a diesel civic tourer, stepped down from accord 2.2lr) That said if I were looking at a crv I'd be tempted by the 160bhp version of the engine with 9 speed auto box.. I'd take a crv over a tiguain but that's just my honda bias

Are you buying new or secondhand OP?

The Tiguan is long in the tooth now and being replaced by an all new model in early 2016. You would want to be getting a very good deal on the existing model to consider it imo. There is also a new Hyundai Tucson just launched which has replaced the ix35. New Kia Sportage due in the new year too.

If your buying used then most of what I said above has little bearing other than trying to negotiate a good price on the Tiguan with the current VW controversy.

Thanks for the replies - yes buying new, know about new Tiguan but prefer the older retro shape and v good specs available at the moment. Love Honda but budget doesn't stretch to the ES sports spec.
Just trying to figure why make a 1.6 engine can give 110ps and a 2.0 engine only 10ps extra -

VW do a wide range of bhp versions of the same basic engine, reason being they cater for a wide audience and they can charge more for the higher ones.
There is also co2 emissions to consider, so I'm guessing the 110bhp version is low emissions. That said the 140 bhp is chape tax too.

Just checked and its €3000 more for the 2.0 150bhp version. There's your answer ;)

Best thing to do is drive one. But also drive the new hyundai Tucson too for comparison.

I'd try and get the 140bhp Tiguan then, there is a nice bit of extra torque in it as the Tiguan is heavy enough.

Wasn't the 2.0tdi 110bhp just a gap fill engine they put in almost all 2009 golfs. Basically it was to fill the gap from when they stopped using the 1.9tdi and we're waiting for the 1.6tdi engine to go into the golf and the rest of the range. So I don't think it was designed as a lower powered 140bhp engine although maybe it was in the tiguans for more than a year.

I'm not saying that it's mechanically Identical to the 140, but it's the same basic engine. In this case the lowest power version of that engine. Point being its not as if VW can't get power out of that engine. In this case they've chosen not to.
In the same way that Honda do a 120bhp and a 160bhp 1.6 diesel. They appeal to different buyers.

The Tiguan never had the 1.9 AFAIK. ANd the 110 was added in 2011

My accord had 140 bhp and the civic 120..i don't find the civic that much of a step down in power.. Saving a significant amount on fuel though.. As others have said I'd drive both and see what you think.. Probably not on your radar but got a skoda brochure today and they doing 0% finance on the yeti..

The civic would be that bit lighter though.

Tiguan was always 2.0 TDI for derv buyers, but in varying levels of power. Only the Touran was available with the 1.9 TDI. As the others have said, the Tiguan is seriously long in the tooth, so I'd look at something else if buying new. I don't know what's good or bad in this category, though, as I have next to no interest in any sort of crossover.

We had a 110ps Tiguan on demo for a while so I drove it a bit - it's not a bad motor to be fair. Doesn't feel underpowered unless you are really trying to push on - torque is available where you need it, but you can tell it's the low power model when trying to accelerate from higher speeds.

Decent specification for free as well, and will hold it's value even though it's being replaced.

Herself had one as a rental for a couple of weeks, and had no complaints - that's coming from a 200bhp+ Volvo

Apparently, all Tiguans built after week 22 have AdBlue - worth checking to see as it's an additional expense - roughly €50 every 12,000km if you get it done by the dealer.

Haven't driven a 1.6 Honda of any sort to compare against, but don't discount the VW as it's old / underpowered.
